What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Relations Account Executive position at Redpoint?

Summary Overview - Travel & Tourism PR Account Executive

Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000 Opps for Bonus & Commission

Founded in 2002, Redpoint is a small, privately owned, boutique PR & marketing agency that serves clients in the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries. We have a team of around 15 employees and our clients are pretty high-profile, such as Tourism Nova Scotia, Perillo Tours, and the iconic Woodstock Inn & Resort in Vermont. So the work we do is both challenging and satisfying.

We’re looking to add to our team with a new PR professional that already has some seasoning in the travel industry. Ideally, this person has a minimum of five years of experience (with a good chunk of that in travel), has established relationships with several travel journalists, and understands the trends/stories relevant in tourism.

Over the course of our 23 years in business, we’ve developed a culture where back-biting, infighting, and office politics do not belong. Rather, people at Redpoint feel supported, appreciated, respected, and heard…by each other and by the owners. So, every Redpointer we hire must align with that vibe. If what you’ve heard so far sounds like a good match for your personality and skill set, please read on to learn more.

Some helpful quick facts about the role:

  • Though the position (and our company) is fully remote, you should live in either New York or New Jersey and you must be based within reasonable commuting distance from NYC (say, no more than 90 minutes). We have an office in NYC where we meet up occasionally, and you’re welcome to work from the office whenever you want.
  • Business hours are from 9am - 5:30pm with flexibility during the day and a culture that supports work/life balance.
  • This position is a new addition to the team, not a replacement hire. We’re growing!
  • Travel is, naturally, part of the job. So be prepared to give your passport and luggage a workout for client meetings, site tours, press trips, conferences, and more.
  • You should have a valid driver's license and be authorized to work in the United States.

About You

As we’re a small agency whose entire PR team collaborates closely on a daily basis, your personality and working style are just as important as your skill set. The Redpoint values of Joy, Thoughtfulness, Accountability, Learning, and Creativity are not just lip service concepts that look good on paper. They’re expressed and embraced in everything we do: the choices we make, the way we treat each other and all our external audiences, and the work we perform. There’s no eye rolling among the staff at Redpoint when we talk about supporting our values – individually and collectively, we walk the talk.

So, you should feel genuinely drawn to those values and want to work in a culture where they matter.

Your particular hobbies and interests don’t matter to us…it’s only important that you HAVE some, as that kind of curiosity and passion helps drive a PR person’s soul. We’ve got foodies, golfers, gamers, artists, dog lovers, cat lovers, readers, pop culture fanatics, moms, dads, walkers, runners, music lovers, science geeks, and more on our team. We learn from and get inspired by each other’s interests all the time. So whatever passions you’re into, we’re here for it (as long as they’re legal).

You should, however, LOVE travel. We may all be different here, but we’re united by a deep love for travel. In fact, at a recent full company meetup, we had a handful of Redpointers give fun presentations on their own “bucket list hotel,” and it was a wild time…the questions and ideas were flying around the room, and you could see people plotting future trips.

Above all, you should care deeply about doing good work. Conscientiousness – which includes being both thorough and resourceful – is another common trait among Redpointers. We all understand that the work each of us does impacts a variety of things, from a client’s profitability and a potential traveler’s expectations, to a teammate’s schedule and team productivity. So you need to treat your job as more than just a series of checkbox items to tick off your list. You need to treat it like it matters…because it does.

Major Activities – Highlights of the Job

At this stage of your career, you should still be a “generalist,” which is what we’re seeking for this role. You pitch media, interact with clients, do research, plan events, and more. If you’ve been in travel for a while, you know things can get quirky. One day you’re tasked with finding a bulldog that can skateboard for an event, the next day you’re trying to track down the best alleged photo of the Loch Ness monster, and the day after that you’re researching recipes for a hotel’s gourmet room service menu for dogs. You should LOVE the diversity and random challenges that come with being a travel PR generalist – it’s quite literally your whole job. Specifics of this role include (but are not limited to):

  • Independently handle day-to-day client relationship needs for small and midsized clients, and play a key role on teams for large clients.
  • Perform daily PR tasks - pitching, writing, research, press visits, etc. – while monitoring overall needs of client programs. Ideally, at this stage of your career, you’re already fully embracing the art of tailored, thoughtful, intentional pitching.
  • Feel confident leading client meetings and being their go-to as needed.
  • Drive media relations activities and generate results.
  • Drive social influencer activities – from initial contract negotiations all the way through to ensuring/capturing results.
  • Take a strong role in managing and executing special events, projects, press trips, media tours, and other major initiatives for clients.
  • Present results to clients regularly and thoroughly, in whatever reporting style they prefer.
  • Infuse client programs with new ideas and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the PR team on cross-client pitching opportunities.
  • Help supervise junior team members as needed.
  • Continue to grow and support Redpoint’s relationships with key journalists in travel, food, lifestyle, business, and a variety of special interest media.

Redpoint Benefits – Highlights

Our people are the heart and soul of Redpoint. Nurturing, growing, and caring for each member of our community is a top priority for us. If someone’s chosen to work at Redpoint, let’s be honest… we want them to give us their all. But in return, we’re going to give them OUR all. And that means caring about them and their entire career journey, not just the portion of it that they spend at Redpoint.

This means that we’ll proactively shepherd your career journey during your time with us, and provide “big company benefits” with “small company attention,” including:

  • Total Compensation Program that includes opportunities for bonuses/commission for all staff.
  • Annual, comprehensive Total Compensation Statement to help you track your growth.
  • 401k matching program.
  • Comprehensive medical insurance – two plan options with Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield (we pay most of the premium, you kick in a small stipend depending on which plan you choose).
  • Employer paid life, short-term disability, and long-term disability insurance.
  • Employee Assistance Program, which provides services for counseling, legal/financial assistance, care giving assistance, employee discounts and more.
  • Annual Wellness Stipend, which can be used for anything from dental bills and yoga classes to financial counseling, purchasing fitness equipment, pet insurance and much more.
  • Generous PTO program, which includes a boat load of paid holidays (including Summer Fridays – and some Winter Fridays, just for fun! – and office closure with full pay the week between Christmas and New Years Day) and a mandatory Rejuvenation Leave every five years of your tenure, which is four consecutive weeks off – fully paid – on top of your regular PTO.
  • Growth & Development Program, which shepherds you through a variety of different learning experiences annually. This program includes a series of tailored Professional Development Retreats (PDR), a Relationship Building Program, and an annual personalized training budget to support classes, conference attendance and other learning opportunities relevant to your career development. (Side note: our PDR program allows people to take one or two days off, up to four times per year, to enjoy their own relaxed, personal learning/inspiration retreat based on their own needs. Through this program, Redpointers have read books, taken classes/webinars, gone to museums, explored their city, and much more. You’re required to fully disconnect from the office on PDR days, and you get a budget to have some fun. It’s a wildly successful and much loved benefit at Redpoint.)
  • Annual Career Development Assessment (CDA) program to help guide your goals and growth.
  • Comprehensive New Child Caregiver Leave.
  • Sensible and thoughtful Bereavement Leave.
  • Redpoint Social Occasions – hosted virtual/in-person outings arranged exclusively for Redpoint.
  • Travel perks! We’re fortunate to receive friends & family discounts in many travel destinations where we have clients.
