Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required OR a minimum of five (5) years of mortgage underwriting experience in lieu of a degree
- Minimum 3 years of recent underwriting experience preferred, with a focus on secondary market loans
- FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) Underwriter certification
- VA Loan Underwriter (SAR/LAPP) certification
- Underwrite conventional, FHA, USDA, and VA mortgage loans in accordance with:
- Investor guidelines
- Agency requirements
- Federal, state, and local regulations
- Review loan files for accuracy, completeness, and compliance prior to secondary market delivery
- Analyze borrower creditworthiness, income, assets, liabilities, collateral, and risk layering
- Ensure adherence to investor overlays and internal credit policies
- Collaborate with loan officers, processors, closers, and post-closing teams to resolve underwriting conditions
- Identify and mitigate risk factors that could impact salability or loan quality
- Maintain strong knowledge of changing investor, Fannie/Freddie, USDA, FHA, VA, and regulatory guidelines
- Strong working knowledge of:
- FHA, VA, and Conventional underwriting guidelines
- Secondary market investor requirements
- Proficiency with LOS systems (Encompass or similar preferred)
- Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple files and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Sound judgment and decision-making abilities
