Position Summary
The Operations Specialist is an essential member of Recycle Utah’s team, supporting the safe, efficient, and community-centered operation of a busy recycling facility. This role operates key industrial equipment, manages material flow, assists the public with proper recycling, and ensures the center remains organized and hazard-free.
This position is hands-on, public-facing, and ideal for someone with strong operational awareness, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to safety and community service. The Operations Specialist may open and close the facility independently.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment & Facility Operations
- Safely operate commercial recycling equipment, including forklift, baler, compactor, EPS densifier, and shredder
- Load processed materials onto transport vehicles
- Monitor and inspect equipment, reporting maintenance needs promptly
- Maintain orderly storage of materials, supplies, and finished bales
Recycling Material Management
- Monitor bins for proper sorting of plastics, cardboard, paper, metals, glass, and more
- Prevent contamination and ensure bins remain accessible and organized
- Coordinate bin exchanges with the Director of Operations
- Move collected materials to designated areas and operate compacting equipment to prevent overflow
Public & Volunteer Engagement
- Assist the public with proper recycling procedures in a courteous, respectful manner
- Communicate clearly about material placement and contamination prevention
- Support volunteers, interns, and community service workers as needed
- Promote a positive, welcoming experience for all visitors
Facility Oversight
- Ensure the center remains clean, organized, and safe throughout daily operations
- Maintain clear pathways and remove hazards in front and back areas
- Open and close the facility independently as scheduled
Primary Objectives
- Ensure proper sorting and management of recyclable materials
- Maintain a safe, clean, and efficient working environment
- Deliver excellent customer service and community support
- Contribute to smooth, consistent operations across the facility
Qualifications
Required
- Ability to safely operate or learn to operate forklifts and other equipment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred
- Experience in recycling operations, warehouse logistics, or similar industrial environments
- 1–2 years of related experience
- Forklift certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Spanish language proficiency
Education
No formal degree required; relevant experience considered.
Physical Demands
- Daily outdoor work in all weather conditions
- Frequent lifting, carrying, and movement of materials
- Regular use of industrial machinery
- Fast-paced, physically active work environment

Reporting Structure
Reports directly to the Director of Operations. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Executive Director or Director of Operations to support Recycle Utah’s mission.
