The Rectory School was founded in 1920 when the Reverend and Mrs. Frank H. Bigelow sought to create an individualized learning program for their son, John. The benchmark program has developed into a distinct advantage of a Rectory education. Rectory has the capacity to meet the educational needs and aspirations of a wide range of students, from strong traditional learners to those who have inquisitive minds but need more academic support.
The Rectory School’s 138-acre rural campus provides a scenic and secure home to approximately 260 students, covering the ages from K to 9 grade. Rectory is a coeducational institution at all levels. The 5 – 9 grade junior school has approximately 210 students, 145 of whom are boarding students. These students come to Rectory from all around the United States and from nine different countries. Average class size is 10, and the student-teacher ratio is 4:1.
Head Coach of Track and Field
The Rectory School Track & Field Coach is responsible for providing a positive, developmentally appropriate, and well-organized athletic experience for student-athletes in grades 5-9. The coach supports the mission and values of Rectory School while fostering skill development, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage all aspects of the Track & Field program, including practices, competitions, and team culture.
- Set clear expectations for athletes and assistant coaches.
- Communicate effectively with athletes, parents, and the Athletic Department.
- Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions to ensure safety.
- Manage team operations, including attendance, rosters, equipment, uniforms, and game-day logistics.
- Attend required athletic meetings, events, and awards ceremonies.
- Comply with all school policies and maintain required certifications and professional development.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong organization, clear communication, and a commitment to student development. Prior coaching or track & field experience is preferred. Coaches are expected to model professionalism, uphold school policies, and contribute positively to the Rectory athletic community
Qualifications
Required:
- Prior coaching experience in Track & Field or a related sport (middle school or high school level preferred).
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to supervise and support middle school student-athletes in a school setting.
- Commitment to student-athlete development, sportsmanship, and school values.
- Current or ability to obtain CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
Preferred:
- Previous head coaching experience in Track & Field.
- Experience coaching middle school–aged student-athletes.
- Familiarity with independent school or NEPSAC athletic programs.
- Knowledge of event-specific training (sprints, distance, jumps, throws).
- Background in education, athletics, or youth development.
Compensation
This position is compensated by a seasonal stipend.
