Collections Specialist – Job Description
Job Summary
A Collections Specialist is responsible for monitoring accounts receivable, contacting customers to collect overdue payments, and resolving billing issues. This role requires strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills to ensure timely payment while maintaining customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor customer accounts to identify outstanding debts and overdue payments
- Contact customers via phone, email, or written communication to collect payments
- Negotiate payment plans and settlements when necessary
- Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies or disputes
- Maintain accurate records of collection activities and customer interactions
- Ensure compliance with company policies and legal regulations (e.g., FDCPA)
- Collaborate with accounting and sales teams to resolve account issues
- Prepare reports on collection status and aging accounts
- Escalate unresolved accounts when necessary
Required Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
- Proven experience in collections, accounts receivable, or customer service
- Strong communication and negotiation skills
- Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to handle difficult conversations professionally
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
- Knowledge of collection laws and regulations is a plus
