Activity Director – Inpatient Behavioral Health / SUD Treatment
About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate and energetic Activity Director to lead our therapeutic recreation program at our inpatient behavioral health and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment center. In this role, you will design and implement structured, recovery-focused programming that aligns with clinical treatment goals, promotes client engagement, supports life skills development, and fosters a structured, recovery-oriented environment.
This position reports to the Director of Operations.
Schedule: Sun-Thurs or Tues-Sat, 3:00pm - 8:00pm (at least 4 days a week, including 1 weekend day)
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement structured, recovery-focused activity programs; develop weekly and monthly activity schedules aligned with individualized treatment plans
- Integrate recreational therapy, psychoeducational groups, life skills training, and wellness activities into daily programming
- Ensure all activities reflect evidence-based practices and trauma-informed care principles
- Collaborate with counselors, case managers, and clinical staff to align programming with client treatment goals; participate in treatment team meetings and provide feedback on client progress
- Reinforce coping skills, relapse prevention strategies, and healthy lifestyle behaviors through structured group activities
- Assess client interests, abilities, and cultural backgrounds; adapt programming for varying levels of care (detox, residential, PHP)
- Encourage participation while respecting each client's readiness for change; foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment
- Plan sober celebrations, milestone recognitions, and holiday events; coordinate guest speakers and recovery-focused workshops
- Organize community-based recovery events when permitted
- Monitor clients during activities to maintain safety and sobriety standards
- Maintain attendance logs, participation notes, and documentation of client engagement in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards
- Manage activity supplies and equipment within budget; track inventory and identify cost-effective programming options
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Recreation Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or related field preferred
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or similar credential preferred but not required
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in a behavioral health, mental health, or SUD treatment setting
- Experience facilitating group activities or psychoeducational programming preferred
- Strong understanding of addiction, recovery principles, and trauma-informed care
- Knowledge of 12-step principles and recovery models (AA, NA) preferred
- Ability to engage diverse populations in early recovery
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
- CPR certification required within 90 days of hire
