Head of AI Drug Discovery

Overview

We are seeking a highly interdisciplinary scientist to lead and execute AI-driven drug discovery programs, with a unique blend of hands-on experimental (wet lab) experience and deep understanding of machine learning-enabled discovery.

This individual will play a critical role in shaping a next-generation discovery engine, where computational predictions and experimental validation are tightly integrated to accelerate therapeutic development.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to AI-enabled drug discovery programs from target identification through lead optimization
• Design and execute wet lab experiments (e.g., molecular biology, cell-based assays, functional screening) to validate computational predictions
• Partner closely with ML / computational teams to:
  • Translate biological questions into modeling problems
  • Generate high-quality datasets for training and validation
  • Iteratively refine models via experimental feedback loops
• Drive development of integrated discovery workflows combining in silico prediction with high-throughput experimental systems
• Interpret multi-omic and screening data to inform model performance and biological hypotheses
• Help define and build AI-enabled platform capabilities (e.g., assay systems, screening strategies, data pipelines)
• Mentor and lead cross-functional teams across biology, chemistry, and data science
• Contribute to scientific strategy, platform direction, and external collaborations

Qualifications

Required

• Ph.D. in Biology, Bioengineering, Computational Biology, Chemistry, or related field
• 8-15 years of experience in biotech/pharma drug discovery environments
• Hands-on wet lab expertise, such as:
  • Molecular biology, protein engineering, cell biology, or assay development
  • High-throughput or functional screening systems
• Proven experience working in or alongside AI/ML-driven discovery programs
• Strong understanding of how experimental data feeds into machine learning models
• Track record of advancing programs (e.g., lead identification, preclinical milestones, or IND-enabling work)

Preferred

• Direct experience building or working within an AI-first drug discovery platform
• Familiarity with:
  • Generative AI / deep learning approaches
  • Computational chemistry, protein design, or omics-driven discovery
• Exposure to closed-loop experimental modeling systems
• Experience at AI-driven biotech companies (e.g., Recursion, Insitro, Exscientia, Generate, etc.)
• Leadership experience managing cross-functional teams
