Job Title: Accounting Manager

Salary: $70,000- $80,000/yearly Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, & More)

Status: This is an at-will, full-time, exempt position.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm; (Occasional evenings and weekends)

Reading and Beyond is a non-profit organization whose mission is “To empower children and families to achieve productive, self-reliant lives.” We operate a variety of programs in collaboration with organizations and schools who work with children and families to build a culture of achievement so that all youth graduate from high school ready for college. We are working to end mutigenerational poverty through education. Families and children move through a “cradle-to-career” pipeline that provides comprehensive support from pre-natal through college to career.


REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer


POSITION SUMMARY: Under general direction of the CEO, the Accounting Manager will be directing, administering and coordinating Reading and Beyond’s policies and procedures related to finance and investment management, safeguarding of assets, and compliance with internal controls. The Accounting Manager is responsible for the general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable; program accounting functions including budgeting and financial reporting to funding sources; supervises accounting staff; and coordinates and plans year end audit functions.


POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: (The information listed below is meant to serve as a sample of job duties and responsibilities. This list is neither inclusive nor exclusive, but indicative of several types of duties performed.)

  1. Manages the overall collaborative fiscal reporting system including completion or supervision of tasks required to record and/or process all accounting information. Such tasks include, but are not limited to, cash receipts, cash disbursements, bank reconciliations, cash management, maintenance of the general ledger, tax compliance, and completion of the annual audit.
  2. Responsible for the preparation and analysis of all internal and external financial data related to the agency’s operations, including budgets, forecasts, financial statements, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting.
  3. Communicates financial conditions and requirements of the agency to all appropriate parties including the CEO, Board, management staff, employees and outside constituencies.
  4. Prepare monthly financial reports and submit reports to RaB’s fiscal agents as needed.
  5. Assists and/or educates agency staff and others regarding the research, development and financial feasibility of current and future projects.
  6. Develop grant budgets and oversee grant modifications as necessary.
  7. Establishes all financial policies, procedures, and systems including accounting systems for the reporting and control of accounts receivable, accounts payable, fixed assets, inventory, purchasing, real estate operations, general ledger, payroll, budgeting, forecasting, cash management and internal management of all departments, ensuring compliance with all fiscal conditions.
  8. Consults with the CEO relative to planning, policy, and overall financial direction.
  9. Develops functional financial plans, prepares program and agency budgets, and recommends objectives and priorities.
  10. Monitors unrestricted and restricted investment portfolios in accordance with Board policy to ensure appropriate risks and rates of return and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.
  11. Prepares and/or oversees the preparation of invoices to funding sources; reports; and other correspondence.
  12. Ensures contract compliance, including interpreting and monitoring contracts with sponsors, submitting required reports, and monitoring covenants and other contract terms.
  13. Manages external vendors, banking and investment relations. Establishes creditability and sustains a positive, productive relationship with the lenders.
  14. Analyzes and monitors the job cost system, assists in the development of various allocation methodologies, including personnel allocation, and applies the allocations developed to the related expenditures.
  15. Trains, supervises, and evaluates assigned personnel to ensure necessary competency in the implementation of financial and administrative activities.
  16. Participates in presentations to the Finance Committee, the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee as requested.
  17. Provides financial training to technical personnel in financial matters as necessary.
  18. Responsible for administrating the computerized accounting system.
  19. Assists in the coordination of activity with outside auditors. Assist auditors in the completion of their fieldwork and in their analysis of systems.
  20. Performs other related duties as assigned.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with not-for-profit organizations, public and private grants and growing organizations is preferred, especially in the areas of nonprofit grant accounting, bid preparation and contract administration.
  • Strong financial planning and analytical skills and experience and the ability to work closely with and support the CEO, Board and other executives in strategic development and implementation.
  • Experienced in using Intuit QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions.
  • Candidate must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • A valid California Driver’s License and proof of insurance is required.
  • Pass TB test and fingerprint clearance.
  • Must pass credit check and education check


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Accounting/Finance) with experience as Financial Manager preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible financial management experience, including at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
