What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Resident Engineer / Construction Inspector position at RE Services?
Build your construction management career with a firm that's grown 600% in the last five years and is just getting started.
RE Services is a San Diego-based construction management and landscape architecture firm where doing great work and doing right by our people aren't competing priorities. They're the same commitment. The San Diego Business Journal has recognized us as one of the region's fastest-growing private companies for consecutive years, and our founder, Vinay Reddy, was recently named an Emerging CM Leader by CMAA. We're small enough that you won't be just a number, and large enough to back you with real support, real projects, and a long-term vision. We run on EOS (the Entrepreneurial Operating System), which means clear priorities, real accountability, and a seat at the table for the people delivering the work.
Our core values guide how we operate, on every project and in the office:
- We Do the Right Thing
- We Never Compromise Safety
- We Are Innovators
- We Commit to Excellence
- We Are Team Players
We're looking for an Assistant Resident Engineer / Construction Inspector to support the delivery of transportation and public works projects across the region. You'll work alongside our Resident Engineers in the field, learning the full scope of CM and contract administration while growing toward the next step in your career.
You'll be our eyes in the field, documenting the work and helping ensure the contractor builds it right, on schedule, and to spec:
- Perform daily inspections of roadway and public works construction, including grading, paving, concrete, storm drains, wet and dry utilities, and traffic improvements
- Abide by and enforce construction safety rules and regulations
- Read and interpret contract documents, plans, and specifications, and verify that completed work complies with them
- Prepare detailed daily inspection reports and maintain accurate, complete project records and photo documentation
- Monitor traffic control and confirm compliance with approved plans
- Assist with inspection of formwork and rebar installation and concrete pours
- Document pay quantities and support development of progress payments and the final estimate
- Track change order work and log material inspection, certification, and acceptance
- Identify and communicate deficiencies or non-compliance to the Resident Engineer and project team
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, testing labs, and agency representatives to keep work moving
- Participate in pre-construction meetings, progress meetings, and punch list and walkthrough inspections
- Other duties as needed to support successful project delivery
- 5 years of inspection or construction oversight experience on public works projects
- Working knowledge of construction methods, materials, and quality control standards
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
- Familiarity with the Caltrans Standard Specifications, Greenbook, Whitebook, and local and regional standard drawings
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality
- Experience with clients such as Caltrans, SANDAG, County of San Diego, MTS, Port of San Diego, and local municipalities (City of San Diego, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Coronado, Vista, Chula Vista, Poway, National City, and others)
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Valid California driver's license and clean driving record
Preferred, not required:
- BS in Civil Engineering or Construction Management; EIT a plus
- Certifications such as CCM, CACM, CMIT, ACI, ICC, QSP/QSD, or NICET
- Knowledge of prevailing wage and labor compliance requirements
- Experience on federally funded projects
- Familiarity with inspection software such as Procore, Virtual Project Manager, etc.
This is a field-based role. Expect time outdoors and on active construction sites in varying weather, with occasional after-hours coverage as project conditions require.
We know the frustration of consultant CM firms that send staff out to operate on an island, with no real connection back to the company. We do it differently. We get together in person at least quarterly, whether socially at events like Padres games and company picnics, or at the office for meetings that keep everyone current on wins, lessons learned, and new initiatives. We also hold monthly internal knowledge-sharing sessions so the whole team keeps learning from each other's projects. And we invest in your growth: we sponsor company-wide CMAA membership and cover the cost of certifications and study materials, with a clear path forward from Inspector to Office Engineer to Resident Engineer. You'll be supported, informed, and part of the team, no matter which site you're assigned to.
- Salary range of $100,000 – $180,000, based on experience and qualifications
- Annual performance bonuses
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Life insurance
- Company vehicle
- Phone stipend
- 3 weeks PTO
- 401(k) with 4% company match
- A culture where your work is visible, your growth is supported, and your voice counts
Offers are contingent on successful completion of reference checks, education and certification verification, a motor vehicle report, and a background check.
Salary : $100,000 - $180,000
