Job Title:  Instructional Assistant – Special Education

Location:  RCHS

Reports to:  Principal

FLSA Status:  Non-exempt

 

SUMMARY:

 

Provides assistance to the classroom teacher in the management, instruction, and personal care of students; performs related tasks as required and directed; all work is performed under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher(s); however, the assistant may independently carry out particular aspects of the instructional program which include activities outside of the normal school day.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND ASSIGNED TASKS:

 

    • Assists teacher with executing the instructional program.
    • Assists teacher with monitoring the safety and well-being of students.
    • Prepares instructional materials as directed by the teacher such as copies and art materials. 
    • Works with individual students, small groups and large groups under the direction of the teacher.
    • Assists with evaluations of instruction as directed by the teachers such as grading tests.
    • Assists teacher with routine classroom reports as directed including but not limited to attendance and clerical reports using paper/pencil or electronic means as appropriate.  Reads, composes and responds to e-mails.
    • Assists with safety drills including but not limited to fire drills, tornado drills, intruder drills and bus evacuation drills.
    • Assists with bus duty and cafeteria supervision.
    • Assists with the planning and supervision of field trips and special events.
    • Supervises the entire classroom for brief periods when called upon to do so by the teacher or the school administrators.
    • Attends parent/teacher conferences, meetings and professional development as directed by the teacher or school administrators.
    • Assists the teacher in maintaining the general appearance of an organized classroom reflecting the instructional program.
    • Models and encourages appropriate behavior and positive self-concept.
    • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding student records and student information.
    • Follows all rules and regulations of the school, school division and state federal laws.
    • Other duties as assigned by the teacher or school administrators.


    MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

    High School diploma or GED and meet the “highly qualified” definition, which can be met by passing the ParaPro Test or through college coursework.


    LANGUAGE AND VERBAL APTITUDE:

    Ability to read and comprehend in English such as instructions, correspondence, memos, and e-mails. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate information in one-to-one, small group, and classroom size group settings.


    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS AND NUMERICAL APTITUDE:

    Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.


    REASONING ABILITY:

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to use logical thinking to define problems and to use common sense in dealing with problems in standard situations.


    INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION:

    Requires the ability to deal with people as a team player and the ability to be adaptable and flexible in dealing with supervisor, colleagues, parents and students.


    PHYSICAL COMMUNICATIONS:

    Requires the ability to talk and hear. Must be able to communicate via the telephone.


    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including but not limited to computers, copy and fax machine, etc. Specific vision requirements include the ability to see and read e-mail and other written communications. Must be able to lift 10 pounds. The employee is required to stand, walk and push. For example, the employee must be able to assist students in the evacuation of the building in a crisis situation such as a fire.
