POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  The Tennis Director provides high-quality tennis instruction to individuals and groups, develops lesson plans, and organizes tennis programs.  They may also manage tennis facilities, maintain equipment, and promote tennis activities.   Delivers excellent service to all members, guests, and program participants.  Responds to member and guest needs, promotes health and fitness through Y programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Key responsibilities include teaching technical skills, strategies, and overall game performance, as well as organizing events and tournaments.

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. 
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. 
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed.  Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete. 
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information. 
  • Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives. 
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events. 
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner. 
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. 
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.  
  • Coordinates and schedules equipment maintenance and repairs.  
  • Ensures the proper working order and cleanliness of the group tennis equipment and facility  
  • Attends staff meetings  
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Develops plans and manages best practices through engagement of team. Effectively creates and manages budgets. Utilizes non-threatening methods to address sensitive issues and inappropriate behavior or performance.  Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in field or equivalent is preferred. 
  • Five years’ experience in related field  
  • Must be a tennis professional that has certification from a recognized organization (e.g., USPTA, PTR).
  • Must have proven experience as a tennis instructor or coach, with a strong understanding of the sport's rules and techniques.
  • Certifications: CPR, AED, Basic First Aid certification.  
  • Ability to learn and implement the YMCA’s software program  
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel 
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time. 
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. 
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.  
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking. 
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate. 
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency 
  • Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
