What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrical System Engineer position at Rainier Recruiting?
Electrical Systems Engineer
Location: El Segundo, CA (On-site)
Compensation: $150,000–$175,000 base equity
Employment Type: Full-time
Why Join
This role sits at the intersection of autonomous systems, marine robotics, and critical infrastructure. You’ll design and own electrical systems for uncrewed surface platforms that deploy subsea robotic vehicles, technology that enables inspection of assets powering global communications and energy networks.
This is not a narrow component-level role. You’ll architect complete, production-ready electrical systems and see them operate in real ocean environments.
What makes this opportunity unique:
- End-to-end ownership of vessel-wide electrical architecture
- Real-world impact on infrastructure that keeps the world connected and powered
- Hands-on startup environment with a strong bias toward deployment, not research
- Challenging operating conditions that demand reliability, robustness, and thoughtful design
- Direct collaboration with mechanical, software, and operations teams shaping a complete platform
What You’ll Do:
- Own the full electrical architecture across propulsion, energy storage, power distribution, control systems, and communications
- Define system topologies, interfaces, grounding, and shielding strategies for safety, serviceability, and robustness
- Create system-level documentation including block diagrams, power trees, and schematics to guide PCB, harness, and enclosure design
- Develop and maintain power budgets, accounting for worst-case and transient operating conditions
- Lead component and vendor selection for power electronics, sensors, converters, controllers, and communication hardware
- Evaluate trade-offs across performance, reliability, cost, availability, and lifecycle risk
- Partner closely with mechanical and software engineers to ensure designs are manufacturable, maintainable, and field-ready
- Support electrical safety, EMC, and marine compliance through architecture and protection strategy decisions
Experience & Background Desired:
- 2–5 years of system-level electrical engineering experience in complex electromechanical systems
- Proven experience taking hardware from prototype through production
- Exposure to marine, aerospace, robotics, or autonomous systems
- Experience with uncrewed or remotely operated vehicles strongly preferred
- Background in high-reliability or mission-critical systems
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of power distribution and energy architectures
- Deep experience selecting components for reliability-critical applications
- Proficiency with electrical CAD and schematic tools
- Familiarity with reliability methodologies (FMEA, DFMEA, MTBF)
- Experience with battery systems, BMS, and hybrid power architectures
Eligibility
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
