The Rail Systems Test Engineer 2 independently performs signal testing, inspections, and commissioning activities for railroad signal systems. This role leads testing tasks, prepares test documentation, and coordinates with construction, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure signal systems meet operational and regulatory requirements.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform signal inspections and testing for highway grade crossing warning systems and wayside signal systems.
  • Conduct in-service testing of signal equipment in accordance with railroad and FRA requirements.
  • Lead testing activities for signal construction and commissioning projects.
  • Develop and prepare test documentation for review and approval to support testing activities.
  • Complete and review test records and reports required by the applicable railroad or client.
  • Identify defective signal conditions and implement remedial actions pending repair.
  • Coordinate testing activities with construction crews, maintenance staff, and project managers.
  • Assist in outlining requirements for phased signal system projects.
  • Support signal system cutovers and commissioning activities.
  • Provide clear written and verbal communication regarding defective signal conditions and test results.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable railroad safety rules, FRA regulations, and company procedures.
  • Assist with training and mentoring junior testing personnel.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers and project stakeholders.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support business operations.

 

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of railroad signal systems, testing procedures, and industry practices.
  • Ability to independently read and interpret signal construction plans, submittals, RFIs, and related project documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and electronic documentation systems.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

 

Required Education and Experience

  • Experience in the development of all signal equipment test procedures to include installation testing, static testing, and dynamic testing.
  • Have advanced knowledge of Signal Vital Processors to include Electrologixs, VHLC, VPI, and Microlock.
  • Have advanced knowledge of track circuits, wayside signals, switch machines, and grade crossing equipment.
  • Minimum 3 to 7 years’ experience as an Signalman, Signal Maintainer, Signal Inspector, or Signal Supervisor with an operating railroad.
  • Completion of a Signal Apprentice Training Program or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in digital technology including use of tablet and/or laptop computer.
  • Competent in using signal testing equipment.
  • Competent in performing FRA signal tests in compliance with railroad standards and FRA Parts 234 and 236.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Ability to share knowledge of signal standards with clients, FRA inspectors, railroad employees, and other RailPros employees.
  • Ability to lead safety meetings and job site safety briefings.

 

Additional Qualifications, Certifications, etc.

  • Ability to pass “eRailSafe” background check and railroad safety and security training.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be able to obtain all Roadway Worker Protection required by the various freight railroads and transit properties.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee Signal Inspector Personnel

 

Internal Relationships

  • Receive supervision and oversight from RailPros directors and project managers.
  • Coordinate with project managers and other technical discipline leads.

 

External Relationships

  • General contractors, sub-contractors, customers, clients, and vendors.

 

Work Environment

  • Moderate exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Moderate exposure to loud noises made by heavy equipment.
  • Work will primarily consist of inspections and maintenance performed in the field, with intermittent office work as needed.

 

Physical Demands

  • Field inspection work will generally require walking up and down steep slopes, on uneven surfaces, and at times, in harsh weather conditions.
  • Sitting, performing repetitive motions using a laptop keyboard.
  • Considerable multi-tasking with telephone, reaching, walking, twisting, and turning.
  • Moderate amount of time performing activities that require depth perception and field of vision, feeling, grasping standing, stooping to take and record measurements.

 

Travel

  • This position requires routine travel to RailPros headquarters, field offices or client offices, work sites and other project related locations.
  • Ability to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time.
  • Expected Travel – 65% to 75%

 

Materials, Tools, Equipment

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and phones.
  • Continual use of protective gear such as hard hats, safety-toed lace-up boots, hearing protection, and safety glasses while on client property/construction sites.
  • Use of test equipment specific to highway grade crossing and wayside signal systems.

Salary : $85,000 - $115,000
