Job Summary
The Rail Systems Test Engineer 1 supports signal testing, inspection, and commissioning activities for railroad signal systems including highway grade crossings, wayside signal systems, and related control equipment. This position works under the supervision of senior engineers and test personnel to perform testing, document results, and support signal construction and maintenance projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform signal inspections, maintenance support, and construction testing activities as assigned
- Assist in performing all tests applicable to highway grade crossing warning systems
- Assist in performing tests applicable to wayside signal systems
- Support in-service testing of signal equipment as directed
- Assist in preparing test setups and supporting test activities during signal system commissioning
- Complete test records for signal tests performed and assist in preparing reports required by the applicable railroad
- Identify and report defective signal conditions to supervisors or senior test engineers
- Assist with implementing remedial actions on defective conditions pending repair
- Support development and review of signal testing documentation
- Assist with field documentation including inspection reports and test forms
- Communicate test results and field observations to supervisors and project team members
- Comply with all applicable railroad/client safety rules, FRA guidelines, and company policies and procedures
- Support project teams during signal cutovers and commissioning activities
- Build and maintain professional working relationships with project personnel and customers
- This position requires routine travel to RailPros headquarters, field offices or client offices, work sites and other project related locations
- Ability to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time
- Expected Travel – 65% to 75%

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Basic understanding of railroad signal systems and signal testing procedures
- Ability to read and interpret signal construction plan sets and wiring diagrams with supervision
- Proficient with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Excel, Word) and Adobe PDF tools
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently with guidance and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Experience in the development of all signal equipment test procedures to include installation testing, static testing, and dynamic testing
- Have advanced knowledge of Signal Vital Processors to include Electrologixs, VHLC, VPI, and Microlock
- Have advanced knowledge of track circuits, wayside signals, switch machines, and grade crossing equipment
- Minimum 0 to 3 years’ experience as an Assistant Signalman, Signal Maintainer, or Signal Inspector with an operating railroad
- Completion of a Signal Apprentice Training Program or equivalent
- Proficiency in digital technology including use of tablet and/or laptop computer
- Competent in using signal testing equipment
- Competent in performing FRA signal tests in compliance with railroad standards and FRA Parts 234 and 236
- Ability to pass “eRailSafe” background check and railroad safety and security training
- Valid driver’s license required
- Must be able to obtain all Roadway Worker Protection required by the various freight railroads and transit properties
