JOB SCOPE:
The basic function of the Refractory Field Supervisor is to supervise foremen and crew on offsite projects. He/She is responsible for working as a team with the safety technician to provide a safe working environment. He/She is also responsible for maintaining a quality oriented, productive, and harmonious job site and completing projects on time.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
- The Refractory Field Supervisor reports directly to and is fully accountable to the Construction Superintendent or Project Manager.
- There are no positions that report directly to the Refractory Field Supervisor when he/she is not managing a project. However, when he/she is managing a project then the crew will report to the Refractory Field Supervisor.
AUTHORITY:
The Refractory Field Supervisor is granted sufficient authority by the Construction Superintendent to accomplish all the responsibilities and duties that are established for this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The responsibilities of the Refractory Field Supervisor include but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain a safe working environment.
- Ensure that all required paperwork is accurately completed and submitted when required.
- Monitor the performance of employees, suppliers, and subcontractors to ensure quality workmanship and materials.
- Ensuring the safe, on time, on budget completion of all jobs under his/her management.
DUTIES AND TASKS:
The Primary duties of the Refractory Field Supervisor include, but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain a safe working environment.
- Report all work-related injuries to appropriate personnel in a timely manner and ensure documentation.
- Implement Company Policies in a fair and consistent manner.
- Support all safety technicians on the job site and ensure that any corrective action is required it will be taken.
- Make frequent visual inspections of all work in progress to guarantee workmanship and quality.
- Approve, by visual inspection, each task as it is completed.
- Participate and approve initial project set up (personnel, equipment, material).
- Maintain a complete and thorough job log including photographic documentation of scope changes, quality, work progress, technical issues, costs, and any other pertinent information.
- Coordinate materials, equipment, small tools, and consumables for the project to ensure the job is cost effective and there are no work stoppages or waste.
- Report all changes in scope or scheduling to the Project Manager. After approval of changes, implement plan with project team.
- Always be courteous and respectful to clients, field personnel, and coworkers.
- Be aware of potential personnel problems; be proactive to address issues with project manager and personnel to avoid major problems.
- Monitor quality, safety, productivity, efficiency, and general morale on the project. Report all incidents contrary to these efforts and assist in developing corrective action plans.
- Post audit all completed jobs to improve estimating accuracy and employee, supplier/subcontractor performance.
- Actively participating in staff meetings.
- Resolve customer complaints as quickly as possible, and to the satisfaction of the customer whenever possible.
- Ensures that all relevant paperwork, including Change Orders, is processed per company guidelines.
- Monitor the quality of work produced and resolve employee and subcontractor performance and work-related issues.
- Promote continuous improvement in Company operations.
- Completes any other projects or tasks that may be assigned by the Construction Superintendent.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- Required: High School degree or equivalent
- Preferred: Two years additional education from an accredited college majoring in engineering and/or construction management
Experience:
- Required: At least five (5) years’ experience in a supervisory position in the REFRACTORY INDUSTRY and at least two (2) years’ experience as a field supervisor estimating project costs/schedules
- Preferred: At least ten (10) years’ experience as a field supervisor managing REFRACTORY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS and five (5) years’ experience estimating project costs/schedules
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities:
- Knowledge of the refractory, commercial - industrial construction business, products, suppliers, and major players.
- Knowledge of plant specific safety skills.
- Must have a strong technical background in the refractory industry.
- Must possess strong leadership skills.
- Must be able to adapt to a changing workload and priorities.
- Ability to communicate with personnel who often are unclear as to their needs. Must be able to problem solve for these people and relay that information in a concise and effective manner to the appropriate parties.
- Ability to communicate and work closely with a diverse group of people, including R & H Quality Refractory Services, Inc. employees at all levels, sub-contractors, suppliers, regulatory agencies, and other outside professionals with whom R & H Quality Refractory Services, Inc. deals on a regular basis.
- Ability to understand and use basic math formulas.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English to read requests for proposals, correspondence, and communicate with current and prospective subcontractors, suppliers, customers and employees.
- Seek guidance and direction as necessary for performance of duties.
- Demonstrate good judgment in investigating and solving problems.
- Respect the confidentiality of R & H Quality Refractory Services, Inc., customer, and personnel information.
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with other department personnel.

- Assume responsibility for staying aware of changes in R & H Quality Refractory Services, Inc. policies and procedures.
- Maintain a well-groomed proper appearance appropriate for the position and situation.
MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE:
The performance of the Refractory Field Supervisor shall be considered acceptable when the following have been accomplished:
- Cost estimates and schedules are accurately prepared on a timely basis.
- Professionalism is demonstrated in dealing with customers, suppliers, subcontractors and the public, maintaining a solid image in the community.
- Customer complaints are kept to a minimum and are resolved quickly and to the customer’s satisfaction whenever possible.
- All schedules are updated daily/weekly and accurately reflect the current status of all projects under his/her management.
- Paperwork is accurately completed on time and submitted to the appropriate personnel.
- The Construction Superintendent is continually informed of all issues that may affect the safety, quality, cost and/or schedule of the jobs under the control of the Refractory Field Supervisor.
- Projects are safely completed on time and within the budgeted cost estimates.
- Continuous improvement actions are realized that contribute positively to the company’s profitability.
- Satisfactorily completes all other duties and tasks assigned by the Construction Superintendent.
