- Post-Secondary School Education in medical secretary/medical transcription or equivalent combination of education (minimum of grade 12) and relative working experience.
- Must have demonstrated typing and other basic clerical skills including computer/word processing, e-mail and faxing experience.
- Medical Terminology course completed through a recognized college.
- For internal candidates, disciplinary and attendance records will be considered.
- Must have a satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check.
- Answers telephones, takes and delivers messages, screens and re-routes calls: contacts individuals within and outside the hospital as necessary.
- Locates and informs nursing personnel of any requests for assistance received from patients and other departments.
- Under the direct supervision of the nurse in charge, calls staff regarding scheduling changes.
- Strategizes with Charge Nurse and Manager regarding unit staffing inclusive of cross site staff.
- Performs order entry functions and other computer data input as necessary.
- Performs clerical work for the nursing unit, including the maintenance of patients’ charts and the ordering of adequate stationery supplies.
- Provides notification by phone for urgent/emergent patients coming from home or other organizations.
- Prepares charts and assembles pertinent prerequisite information for urgent/emergent patients.
- Strong public relations/team communication and organizational skills.
- Computer skills including: Word, Outlook and Excel.
- Must be able to accept direction and work with minimum supervision.
- Other duties as assigned.
