SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary objective of school health services provided by the school nurse is to foster the optimum level of wellness for students and staff. The school nurse provides a broad range of health services including acute, episodic and emergency care. School nurses manage the care of students with special health care needs at school. The school nurse coordinates the health needs of students to reduce barriers and promote effective learning.
The school nurse is responsible for developing, implementing and managing a school health program for a school population as defined by the school district.Responsibilities include: Assesses the current health needs of the student populationMaintains individual health records on each studentCoordinates and manages the health needs of students within the schoolAdministers required daily and prn medications Provides required medical treatments to students with specialized health care needs Develops Individualized Health Care Plans for students with specialized health care needsEnsures students comply with mandated school health requirementsProvides daily episodic care to students/staffProvides emergency care to students/staffControls the spread of communicable diseases within the schoolConducts required health screenings for students (vision, hearing, postural, heights and weights)Refers students/staff for follow up medical evaluationsCollaborates with parents, physicians and identified community agencies to coordinate students health care within the schoolProvides health education to students and staff around specified health issues/topicsThe school nurse is a member of the Student Support Team, Crisis Team and Wellness Team.QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse, Bachelor DegreeCurrent licensure to practice as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of MassachusettsMA DESE licensure as a school nurse Two years of prior nursing experience in school, pediatric, public health or other relevant clinical areasCPR/AED certifiedReports to: Director of Nursing and School Principal
