QUINCY PUBLIC SCHOOL EMPLOYEE JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: School Nurse
Qualifications:
1. Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Illinois
2. Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation program completion
3. Prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, emergency or community health nursing.
4. Computer literacy and competency in the use of existing technology.
Reports To: Nursing Director; Principal
Job Goal: To provide direct nursing services to students and staff members to maximize health and wellness in the school community. All duties are performed in accordance with district/state board of education policies and procedures and state law regarding nurse practice.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Nursing Care a. Provides direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff in response to the nursing assessment and in accordance with professional standards, school policy and procedures, and state and local mandates. b. Administers medication with appropriate documentation. c. Participates in maintaining accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions, and the related archival responsibilities. d. Makes appropriate assessment and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
2. Communication a. Maintains communication with the School Nurse Supervisor, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the health and safety needs of students. b. Provides health services, information, and counseling in an effective and positive manner to enhance the health and wellness of the school community. c. Completes accident/incident reports for students/staff. d. Compiles data for statistical purposes. e. Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
3. Organization a. Maintains documentation of student/staff visits on individual health records b. Maintains the daily environment of the health office facility and supplies. c. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. d. Performs other health or school related work as required.
4. Professional Development a. Utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge. b. Participates as an active member of the school community, representing health/wellness.
Safety, Health and Welfare Issues: Emergency care, first aid, chronic disease and/or special health problems, communicable disease, medications, nursing procedures, health education, emotional care, crisis intervention, abuse/neglect, OSHA, staff wellness and safety, student health records, health care plans, health assessments, screening and referrals/follow-ups.
Terms of Employment: 181 days, 7 hours/day. Hourly pay in accordance with the Nurse Salary Schedule at a level commensurate with school nursing experience.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education policy by Nursing
Director.
