Position Summary
The Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, securing, optimizing, and supporting a multi-site campus network environment. This role will manage and enhance network connectivity across campus locations using dark fiber and MPLS technologies.
The ideal candidate has strong hands-on Cisco networking experience, solid network architecture and design skills, and practical experience with enterprise firewalls, wireless networks, and cloud-managed infrastructure. The Network Engineer will work closely with IT leadership, systems teams, security teams, vendors, and business stakeholders to ensure a secure, resilient, and high-performing network.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise network infrastructure across multiple campus locations.
- Administer and support switching, routing, wireless, and network management technologies.
- Manage connectivity utilizing dark fiber, MPLS, Internet, and other WAN technologies.
- Develop scalable network architectures, standards, diagrams, and implementation plans.
- Configure and manage Cisco, Meraki, Palo Alto, and FortiGate technologies.
- Support LAN, WAN, WLAN, data center, Internet edge, and remote-site connectivity.
- Design and maintain network segmentation, VLANs, routing domains, access control policies, and high-availability solutions.
- Configure and troubleshoot dynamic routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP.
- Manage firewall policies, NAT, VPNs, security zones, site-to-site tunnels, and remote-access connectivity.
- Monitor network performance, availability, capacity, and security.
- Troubleshoot complex network incidents and perform root-cause analysis.
- Participate in planned maintenance, change management, disaster recovery, and business continuity activities.
- Create and maintain accurate network documentation, including topology diagrams, IP address plans, configurations, and operating procedures.
- Evaluate new networking technologies and recommend improvements based on business and technical requirements.
- Coordinate with telecommunications providers, hardware vendors, contractors, and managed service providers.
- Mentor junior network engineers and contribute to team standards and knowledge sharing.
- Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to critical network outages when required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- 5 or more years of experience supporting enterprise network infrastructure.
- Strong hands-on experience with Cisco routing and switching technologies.
- Experience designing and supporting multi-site campus networks.
- Experience with dark fiber, MPLS, Ethernet transport, and WAN connectivity.
- Demonstrated understanding of network architecture, redundancy, scalability, and high availability.
- Experience with IPv4, IPv6, VLANs, STP, trunking, port channels, QoS, DHCP, DNS, NAT, and IP addressing.
- Proficiency with routing protocols such as OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP.
- Experience administering enterprise firewalls, preferably Palo Alto and FortiGate.
- Experience with Cisco Meraki or similar cloud-managed networking platforms.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or equivalent experience.
- Palo Alto Networks certification or hands-on experience with Panorama.
- Fortinet certification or equivalent FortiGate experience.
- Experience designing, deploying, and troubleshooting enterprise Wi-Fi networks.
- Experience with Cisco wireless, Meraki wireless, or comparable WLAN platforms.
- Knowledge of wireless surveys, RF design, channel planning, roaming, authentication, and performance optimization.
- Experience with network automation, scripting, or infrastructure-as-code tools such as Python, Ansible, or Terraform.
- Familiarity with Cisco DNA Center, Cisco ISE, network access control, and 802.1X.
- Experience with monitoring and management platforms.
- Knowledge of SD-WAN, SASE, cloud networking, and hybrid-cloud connectivity.
