What are the responsibilities and job description for the Permit Technician position at Quality Material Handling Inc.?
About QMH
Quality Material Handling, Inc. (QMH) is a full-service warehouse racking and storage systems company specializing in integrated compliance solutions - including permitting, engineering coordination, fire suppression, and installation - for commercial and industrial clients throughout Southern California and beyond. We don't just sell racking; we manage the entire project lifecycle so our customers can open faster and operate confidently.
Our permit department is a core part of what sets QMH apart. We take permitting seriously, and this role is at the center of that.
The Role
We are hiring a Permit Technician to join our existing permit team in Rancho Cucamonga. This is a technical, detail-driven role for someone who understands building codes, takes ownership of their work, and thrives in a structured, fast-paced environment without needing to be managed on every step.
You will be responsible for the full technical lifecycle of permit packages for high pile storage and pallet rack/storage system projects - from code research and initial plan drafting through city corrections and final package submission. You are not the city runner; we have a dedicated submittal coordinator for that. Your job is to make sure everything they submit is airtight. This role requires someone who is self-directed, professionally disciplined, and capable of managing multiple active projects with accuracy and accountability.
What You'll Do
Code Analysis & Permit Package Development
- Research and interpret applicable building codes, fire codes, and city-specific requirements for high pile storage and pallet rack installations
- Develop complete permit packages including plans, specifications, calculations, and supporting documentation that meet all jurisdictional requirements
- Collaborate with engineers and third-party consultants to ensure full compliance and package integrity before submittal
CAD Drafting & Plan Production
- Produce initial floor plans, rack layout drawings, and construction documents in AutoCAD for use in permit submittals
- Revise and update drawings in response to city corrections or engineering feedback
- Ensure all drawings meet city submittal standards, labeling requirements, and applicable code references
City Corrections & Resolution
- Review and interpret city-issued correction notices; develop clear, accurate responses and corrected documentation
- Communicate directly with city building and fire departments to clarify requirements, resolve discrepancies, and move projects forward
- Track correction cycles and maintain accurate project status records
Coordination & Communication
- Work in close coordination with Project Managers, the permit submittal coordinator, engineering firms, and sprinkler contractors to keep all permit-related workstreams aligned
- Follow up with sprinkler contractors on fire suppression permit status and ensure coordination with the overall project permit timeline
- Communicate proactively with internal stakeholders on project status, correction timelines, and any issues requiring escalation
What You Bring
Required
- Minimum 2 years of experience in permit processing, plan checking, building department work, or a closely related technical role
- Working knowledge of California Building Code (CBC) and applicable fire codes
- Proficiency in AutoCAD - you use it daily and you're comfortable producing and revising construction documents
- Strong ability to read, interpret, and apply building plans, code sections, and engineering documentation
- Exceptional organizational skills - you manage multiple projects simultaneously without dropping details
- Ability to work independently, take full ownership of your assignments, and communicate proactively when issues arise
- Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record (occasional site visits and city office visits required)
Preferred
Experience with high pile storage permitting, warehouse racking systems, or the material handling industry
Familiarity with Inland Empire and greater Los Angeles area jurisdictions and their submittal requirements
Background in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related discipline
Bilingual English/Spanish
What to Expect
- Full-time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- In-office at our Rancho Cucamonga headquarters
- Occasional site visits or city office visits
- A team environment with clear project ownership and a high standard for quality and accountability
- Direct exposure to a specialized, growing segment of the construction and compliance industry
Why QMH
QMH has built its reputation on doing the hard parts of warehouse compliance right - the permitting, the engineering coordination, the inspections - so our customers don't have to. If you want a role where your technical expertise actually matters, where you'll grow your knowledge of a specialized industry, and where the work you produce has a direct impact on real projects, this is it.
