What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Caretaker position at Quad City Animal Welfare Center?
The Animal Caretaker is responsible for providing compassionate, consistent daily care to animals housed at our clinic. This position plays a vital role in supporting animal health, comfort, and overall well being by maintaining clean environments, monitoring behavior, and assisting with routine care. The Animal Care Assistant works closely with veterinary and clinic staff to ensure each animal receives appropriate care in a safe, sanitary, and low stress environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide daily care for animals including feeding, watering, and maintaining proper nutrition according to established protocols
- Clean and sanitize kennels, cages, runs, exam areas, and animal housing to maintain a healthy environment
- Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral changes and report concerns promptly to clinic staff
- Administer medications as directed and accurately document treatments and observations
- Ensure animals are comfortable with clean bedding, appropriate housing, and environmental enrichment when appropriate
- Safely handle animals of varying sizes, breeds, temperaments, and medical conditions
- Maintain accurate records related to feeding, medications, behavior notes, and daily care tasks
- Assist with intake and discharge of animals as needed
- Observe proper sanitation and disease control protocols to prevent the spread of illness
- Wash dishes, laundry, and maintain supplies needed for daily animal care
- Assist clinic staff with basic animal handling during examinations or treatments when requested
- Maintain a clean and organized work area including treatment rooms and animal care spaces
- Follow all safety procedures for both staff and animal handling
Qualifications
- Previous animal care experience preferred but not required
- Ability to work independently and complete tasks efficiently
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Dependable with consistent attendance and punctuality
- Comfortable working in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions
- Ability to handle animals safely and compassionately
- Basic knowledge of animal behavior and health indicators preferred
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members
Pay: $16.00 per hour
