Duties
- Act as the main liaison between patients, families, healthcare providers, and insurance companies to facilitate effective communication and coordination of care.
- Manage patient intake processes, including gathering medical history, verifying insurance information, and scheduling appointments.
- Assist with discharge planning by coordinating follow-up care, home health services, and necessary medical equipment.
- Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems to document patient interactions accurately and efficiently.
- Conduct utilization review and management to ensure appropriate use of healthcare resources in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Support case management activities by tracking patient progress, updating care plans, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide education on medical terminology, hospital procedures, and available support services to patients and their families.
Requirements
- Proven experience in critical care settings such as ICU, emergency medicine, or hospital medicine is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of medical coding systems including CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), ICD-9/10 (International Classification of Diseases), and ICD coding practices.
- Experience working within hospital environments such as Level I or Level II trauma centers or pediatric units like PICU or neonatal intensive care units (NICU).
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems and healthcare compliance standards like HIPAA is essential.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to handle sensitive situations empathetically while maintaining professionalism.
- Background in nursing, social work, behavioral health, or managed care is advantageous.
- Ability to multitask efficiently in a high-pressure setting while maintaining attention to detail.
