Medical Assistant - Mentor

 

Medical Assistant: Starting Pay Range: $20.05 - $23.59 an hour

Job Summary:  A team member of nursing services who participates in the delivery of health care to the patients of Pueblo Community Health Center.

 

Reports to:
•    Clinical Nursing Manager

Supervision Exercised:
•    None

 

  • Education/Experience/License/Certification: 
     A current Colorado license - Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.) or graduate of a Medical Assistant program.
  • Current certification or registration through NHA, AMT, AAMA or other recognized credentialing organization is preferred.
  • Current B.L.S. with skills demonstration C.P.R. certification for Healthcare Providers required.
  • One year as an L.P.N. or Medical Assistant with demonstrated and documented competence in all Medical Assisting duties.

Required Travel:  Occasional travel is required including day-to-day local travel.

  • Essential to have ability to understand information/instruction, be able to exchange verbal information with others and ability to present information/instruction verbally.
  • Essential to have ability to read and understand written materials and to compose information/instruction in a written form.
  • Essential to have ability to memorize.
  • Essential to have ability to reason mathematically, have analytical skills and be able to problem solve.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to provide productive feedback to employees in a timely, direct, and supportive manner.
  • Explains concepts and procedures clearly and completely.
  • Ability to speak Spanish desirable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure the function and activities of this department to embrace the philosophy, mission, values, and Communicate with Heart service model supported by the Board of Directors of Pueblo Community Health Center, Inc.
  2. Adhere to the guidelines and procedures of Pueblo Community Health Center, Inc.
  3. Maintain knowledge of all case management programs used within the department.
  4. Follow scheduling procedures for providers.
  5. Follow clinical workflows and documentation within electronic medical records.
  6. Assist a Medical Provider in providing direct patient care as needed, including treatments, procedures, and emergencies.
  7. Access, use and update clinical data from various outside agencies. 
  8. Follow clinical lab procedures including Point of Care Testing.
  9. Maintain compliance with vaccine storage and handling, and administration policy and procedure.
  10. Maintain compliance with all Nursing and Infection Control Policies and Procedures at all clinical sites.
  11. Utilize case Management programs (EIS, Breast Health, Colorectal Cancer screening, Medicare annual wellness visits (MAWV), and pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric immunizations) and standing orders associated with them.
  12. Assure exam rooms are stocked and supplied per policy and procedure.
  13. Manage daily workflows to ensure timely completion of daily tasks.
  14. Adhere to Nursing policies and procedures
  15. All patient calls and tasks received from providers’ inbox but do not ERx any medication.
  16. Provide nursing/medical assistant health care services appropriate to the age-specific needs of all patients in accordance with the principles of growth and development for infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric life cycles.
  17. Ensure all clinical information is entered into and maintained within patient’s electronic medical record.
  18. May perform phlebotomy at satellite clinics.   
  19. Adhere to the Infection Control Policies and Procedures.
  20. Assist in the training of New Employees, Medical Assistant Apprentice, and/or Student Externs
    1. Adult, pediatric, geriatric (Medicare) and nurse visit templates.
    2. HPI, medication reconciliation, allergies, transition to care and history updates.
    3. IZ, Dep, PPD templates.
    4. Order management template.
    5. Office procedure template.
    6. Quality measures including clinical guidelines.
    7. Telephone communications template and inbox.
    8. Provider test action and provider PAQ.
    9. Manage inbox.
    10. Document library.
    11. Faxing orders.
    12. Chart abstraction.
    13. Scheduling, rescheduling, and cancelling appointments with providers.
    14. Review provider schedule and templates including color codes.
    15. Instruct on use of patient demographic information.
    16. Assist in setting up EPM provider schedules and my phrases in EHR.
    17. Provide adequate instruction to care for patients following nursing policy and procedures.
    18. Provide direct supervision while rooming patients, including assisting providers.
    19. Provide direction and instruction as to most efficient workflow.
    20. Ensure all charting is completed- including vital signs, tobacco cessation, BMI plan, immunizations.
    21. Orient and reinforce safety and security measures of the clinical site.
    22. Addresses individual needs through coaching and teaching to improve learning and enhance performance.
    23. Validate competencies on New Employees, Medical Assistant Apprentice, and/or Student Externs using our electronic documentation system.
  21. Demonstrate teamwork.
  22. May assist in maintaining required logs at PCHC per policy and procedures.
  23. May perform sterilization of instruments and routine upkeep of autoclave(s) per policy and procedures.
  24. Maintain positive attitude.
  25. Communicate progress and concerns related to mentoring New Employees, Medical Assistant Apprentice, and/or Student Externs with Clinical Nurse Manager
  26. Maintain current licensure and CPR certification.
  27. Perform duties specific to assignment at a satellite clinic per policy and procedure. 
  28. Have knowledge and understanding of safety and security practices implemented at PCHC.
  29. Maintain patient confidentiality.
  30. Assist with accurate and timely completion of time and attendance activities.
  31. Follow organization and departmental call off procedure.
  32. Perform other related duties as assigned.
