CNC Supervisor



JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/ Objectives

The CNC Supervisor is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations for the CNC Department. This includes, but is not limited to, resource scheduling and directing, managing raw material inventory, employee training and onboarding, department reporting requirements, and ensuring all related Puck policies and quality standards are followed. The CNC Supervisor ensures that all CNC technicians operate machines effectively, safely, and to meet production goals.



Essential Functions

1. CNC Technician Functions Oversight:

  • Ensure team members operate one or more of the following machines: CNC Lathes, CNC Mills, Press Brakes, Saws, and Lasers prior to fabrication, paint, and assembly.
  • Verify technicians effectively load parts, cycle machines, and detect malfunctions in machine operations, such as quality and placement.
  • Oversee production lots and ensure communication regarding production runs.
  • Ensure technicians accurately read blueprints to determine machine adjustments and material requirements.
  • Verify accurate interpretation of CAD models and drawings for proper dimensions.
  • Ensure proper completion and maintenance of paperwork for parts.

  • Confirm safe operation of cranes and forklifts by team members.

 

2. Day-to-Day Department Operations:

  • Manage weekly CNC job schedules and assign tasks to ensure all due dates are met.
  • Communicate any successes, issues, concerns, or questions to the Production Manager.
  • Ensure the CNC team has the necessary resources to complete essential daily job functions and communicate needs to the Production Manager.
  • Manage raw material inventory to ensure the right materials are always on hand when needed, communicating with the purchasing department for additional inventory.
  • Ensure all team members stay on task and meet minimum utilization requirements based on the production department policies.
  • Review team member labor and pay hours for accuracy.
  • Manage time-off requests from team members, while ensuring satisfactory scheduled resources are available to meet expected productivity.

  • Responsible for ensuring that all CNC team members are clocked in on correct jobs and are following the correct clock in/out procedures.

 

3. Training & Mentorship:

  • Act as a champion of PUCK policies and procedures; mentor and train direct reports to ensure adherence to such policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the department follows the Puck Quality Assurance Program and technicians are current on program requirements and standards.

  • Have a thorough understanding of all equipment, methods, and procedures to effectively train new hires and upgrade the skills of existing team members.

 

4. Continuous Improvement & Safety:

  • Constantly evaluate the efficiencies of the team and identify bottlenecks, moving to eliminate them where possible and practicable.
  • Maintain the work area and equipment in a clean, orderly condition and ensure compliance with all OSHA and Puck safety rules.

  • Provide motivation, support, and guidance to all CNC employees while maintaining a positive work environment that supports employee retention and recruitment.

 

5. Interdepartmental Communication:

  • Regularly communicate with team leaders on the status and priority of tasks, such as when items are ready for field requests, what is currently being worked on, what needs to be cut first, etc.

  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date documents by accurately and timely informing the engineering department with information that needs to be added or changed.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position supervises employees within the CNC department and is responsible for their performance management and hiring. The position participates in meetings regarding performance reviews and disciplinary or corrective action and has the authority to make disciplinary decisions in collaboration with the Production Manager.



Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.



Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to talk or hear. The team member is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The position requires frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling objects that are 50 pounds or heavier. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.



Position Type & Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position (40 hours/week). Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Opportunities to work extended hours during the week and weekend may be optional or required as job duties demand.



Travel

No travel is regularly expected for this position.



Required Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED diploma.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience operating CNC machines (Lathes, Mills, Press Brakes, Saws, Lasers), with at least 1-2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
  • Proven ability to read blueprints and interpret CAD models/drawings.
  • Strong understanding of CNC machine operations, setup, and maintenance.



Preferred Education & Experience

  • Technical degree or certification in CNC Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field.
  • More than 2 years of leadership experience.
  • Experience with specific CNC programming languages or software.
