Job Overview:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accounting Manager to join our team in Madison, Wisconsin. This role is responsible for overseeing all accounting processes, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with financial regulations. Reporting directly to the Controller, the Accounting Manager will provide leadership to the accounting staff and manage financial operations for multiple entities. This is an onsite position offering an opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and support accounting department staff by providing leadership, guidance, training, and performance feedback.
- Maintain and analyze all general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Assist team members in reviewing job costing entries and recommend adjustments for proper cost allocation.
- Lead the month-end close process, including bank reconciliations and journal entries.
- Monitor daily cash balances and prepare wire/ACH transfers as needed.
- Record and manage fixed assets, ensuring compliance with internal controls and procedures.
- Maintain inventory records and establish procedures for stock inventory management.
- Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP or applicable standards.
- Prepare and file Sales and Use Tax returns in compliance with jurisdictional requirements.
- Assist with monthly commission calculations and supporting documentation.
- Prepare and file annual 1099 forms and personal property tax returns.
- Monitor and review company-wide expense reports and corporate credit card spending.
- Support the annual corporate tax filing process and R&D Tax Credit study.
- Manage and file lien notices to secure payment rights in compliance with construction lien laws.
- Review and evaluate insurance policies to ensure adequate and cost-effective coverage.
- Establish internal controls and guidelines for accounting operations and budget preparation.
- Present financial recommendations to the Controller regarding objectives and policy decisions.
- Conduct ad-hoc financial analyses on revenue streams, capital investments, and contracts.
- Administer Jonas Software, including user and reporting settings, and provide employee support.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations and reporting requirements.
- Provide support for Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable functions as needed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to perform internal accounting audits.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of financial records and uphold ethical standards in all practices.
- Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration required.
- Five years or more of related experience required.
- Certified Public Accountant designation preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Excel.
- Proficient in accounting and tax preparation software; experience with Jonas Enterprise is beneficial.
- Knowledge of Sales and Use Tax filing with multiple state jurisdictions; Canadian Sales and Use Tax knowledge preferred.
- Proficient in fixed asset management, including depreciation scheduling and reporting.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively as needed.
- Knowledge of accounting theory and processes in industries such as construction, wholesale, contracting, or service.
