Top 5 Interview Guide Questions
- Leadership & accountability: Tell me about a fiber (or broadband) build project where you inherited misaligned stakeholders (construction, I&M/ops, vendors, market leadership). How did you reset expectations, assign owners, and hold teams accountable to get back on plan?
- Listen for: clear operating cadence, escalation path, vendor management, measurable commitments, and outcomes.
- Fiber/broadband execution experience: Walk me through the end-to-end lifecycle you’ve managed for a fiber deployment project (planning through build and launch readiness). What were the critical path items and the most common failure points? What was the scope and scale of the project or program?
- Listen for: permitting/ROW, make-ready, utility locates, splice/testing, as-builts, closeout, and launch handoff.
- 5–8 years PM depth (scope/schedule/budget): Describe the most technically complex project you ran that was at risk on schedule and cost. What metrics did you track weekly, what tradeoffs did you make, and what was the final delivery result?
- Listen for: forecast vs actuals, earned value or equivalent, change control, risk register discipline, and decision rationale.
- Data, reporting & tools (Power BI / dashboards): What reports/dashboards have you built or owned to manage a market build plan? Which KPIs did you choose, how did you validate the data, and how did you use the reporting to drive action in ops reviews and exec updates? What applications or tools do you use to manage your work and track progress and capture risks to the plan?
- Listen for: data sources, definitions, refresh cadence, exception-based management, and storytelling for executives.
- Excel capability (practical test question): If I gave you 2 or 3 production files (addresses, footage, dates, cost codes, and crew info), how would you structure Excel to (a) spot schedule slippage, (b) integrate the data into a single comprehensive view (c) produce a weekly executive summary?
- Listen for: pivot tables, Power Query, lookups, conditional formatting, basic forecasting, and clean data model practices.
