Less-than-Truckload (LTL) Procurement Manager:

The Less-than-Truckload Manager is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and securing carriers for shipments across LTL and parcel modes within the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. This role requires strong negotiation skills and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, managing a diverse carrier portfolio.

Key responsibilities include building and maintaining long-term relationships with carriers, strategically expanding the carrier network, and optimizing profitability through market analysis and pricing strategies. The role also oversees procurement events such as RFPs and mini bids, leveraging technology and data analytics to enhance operational efficiency.

Ideal candidates will have a proven record of accomplishment in carrier sales and relationship management and ability in transportation sourcing. The role demands excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to performance management and continuous improvement, particularly within industry verticals such as chemical, life sciences, industrial, and retail.

Key Responsibilities:

Carrier Sourcing & Portfolio Expansion:

  • Strategically develop new carrier partnerships to diversify the portfolio, enhance service offerings, and boost company profitability.
  • Proactively identify, vet & onboard carriers to meet the dynamic needs of customer requirements, internal standards, and DOT regulations.
  • Develop long-term strategies with carriers to match their capacity with consistent opportunities within the company's network, fostering mutual growth and success.
  • Maintain open, effective communication with carriers to understand their capabilities and needs, leveraging this information to create efficient business solutions.

Less-than-Truckload Procurement Management & Performance Monitoring

  • Cultivate and support strong, long-term relationships with existing carriers, positioning the company as a preferred partner across both contract and spot freight lanes.
  • Track, evaluate & conduct carrier performance using key KPI Metrics
  • Swiftly engage in root-cause and corrective action with carrier-related issues , implementing preventative measures to enhance service quality and minimize disruptions.
  • Conduct regular business reviews with carriers, utilizing cross-functional team input and performance scorecards to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Assist with carrier invoicing & claims resolution/collection where necessary.

RFP Management and Pricing Analysis & Negotiation:

  • Manage the end-to-end strategy and execution of procurement events, including RFPs and mini-bids, and source capacity outside regular bid cycles as needed, ensuring the selection of carriers that offer the best combination of pricing and service.
  • Conduct an in-depth pricing analysis to support carrier negotiations, optimizing profitability while meeting service and capacity needs.

Technology Utilization: Harness various technology platforms & data analytics, and other available resources to make well-informed decisions, engage in price negotiations, drive process automation, and enhance operational efficiency.

  • Accurately manage the carrier database, ensuring all data records are valid, up-to-date, and compliant with company & client standards.
  • Implement and maintain carrier rate tariffs within the contract management tool
  • Ability to consistently follow existing processes, develop new processes, and maintain required standards, and work with the team to improve them

Market Analysis & Insight :

  • Continuously monitor and analyze transportation market conditions, providing valuable insights to the team and carrier network to inform strategic decisions and drive competitive advantage.
  • Stay informed on current transportation market trends and developments, acting as a resource for internal teams and customers on these issues.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, supply chain, or a related field is preferred.
  • Negotiation Expertise: Demonstrated success in negotiating favorable terms and rates, with strong negotiation skills.
  • Relationship Building: Proven ability to engage and collaborate with carrier leadership to foster strategic relationships.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional ability to communicate effectively and build strong, long-term partnerships with carrier leadership and stakeholders.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of logistics software and tools, including RFP Software, Highway/RMIS for carrier onboarding, CRM systems, project management tools, contract management software, DAT, AI Greenscreens, and Carrier 411,
  • Transportation Sourcing: Expertise in sourcing for Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) and parcel transportation; experience in Truckload transportation is a plus.
  • Analytical Skills: Highly analytical, with the ability to independently conduct and interpret basic analyses and experience using business intelligence tools like Tableau, Power BI, and Excel
  • Self-motivation & Teamwork: Independent, proactive, and self-motivated team player with a strong work ethic and the ability to take initiative.
  • Attention to Detail & Organization: Exceptional attention to detail, with strong time management and organizational skills to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Adaptability: Ability to perform and thrive in a rapidly changing environment.

Related Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in the transportation, logistics, and supply chain industry.
  • At least 3 years of carrier sales experience or transportation/procurement sourcing experience
  • 2 years’ of experience in project management
