The RI READS Elementary School Literacy Instructional Support Leader serves as a key instructional leader supporting the implementation of evidence-based literacy instruction aligned to the Science of Reading. This role is dedicated to improving student outcomes—especially for Multilingual Learners (MLLs), Differently Abled Students, and other historically underserved groups—through job-embedded coaching, data-informed planning, and professional learning. The coach will support teachers with effective use of curriculum, assessments, and instructional practices that align with district priorities and state legislation.

 

The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students (about the seating capacity of Madison Square Garden) attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 20 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 11 high schools, and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, about 2,000 are educators, and over 600 others directly support our schools' students and families.

 

Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 7% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial and 1% Native American. Approximately 40% of students are multilingual, and about 16% receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Our students and families speak more than 55 languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education or a related field
  • Evidence expertise in Science of Reading methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to coach educators, lead professional learning, and analyze instructional data 
  • Experience designing universal design for learning and targeted interventions 
  • Administrator certification or interest in pursuing certification preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in literacy instruction
  • Science of Reading Certification

RIDE Requirements:

  • Valid Rhode Island teaching certification (K-6 or Secondary English or Middle Grades English (5–8) or Secondary English (7–12) or Middle School English Endorsement or
    • PK-8 Special Education or 
    • English to Speakers of Other Languages (PK–12) or
    • Bilingual and Dual Language Education (5–8), preferred
    • Building or District Administrator certification, preferred
    • Interest in pursuing this certification in the near future 
    • Reading specialist, preferred

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:

 

Instructional Leadership

  • Provide job-embedded coaching aligned to Science of Reading practices and district literacy goals 
  • Support teachers in implementing high-quality literacy curriculum and interventions 
  • Lead lesson internalization, co-teaching, and feedback cycles to strengthen instructional practices 
  • Facilitate data-driven PLCs focused on literacy instruction and student progress 
  • Design and deliver professional learning sessions and literacy-focused workshops 
  • Guide early career teachers and those new to structured literacy with curriculum implementation

Student Support Systems

  • Analyze student data from i-Ready, dyslexia screeners, and other assessments to inform instruction 
  • Support teachers in planning differentiated, small-group instruction for students at all reading levels 
  • Collaborate with school- and district-level teams (including Office of Multilingual Learners and Special Education) to align supports
  • Ensure equitable access to grade-level literacy content through inclusive and culturally responsive practices
  • Contribute to MTSS structures with literacy-based interventions and progress monitoring

Operational and Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintain shared coaching documentation and weekly logs using district platforms 
  • Attend required grant trainings and statewide collaboration meetings 
  • Partner with school administrators to align literacy coaching efforts with school improvement goals 
  • Communicate instructional priorities and student supports to families as needed 
  • Support district extended learning opportunities, including February, April, and Summer Academies
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to remain current with literacy research and best practices
  • Perform other duties aligned with district priorities as assigned

Additional Responsibilities and Expectations 

  • Support teachers to use HQCM and skillfully adapt lessons to increase student engagement and learning.
  • Improve scores on the literacy “look-fors” tool, specifically strands related to instruction and student engagement for multilingual learners and differently-abled students.
  • Increase student performance on early learning assessments, K-2 literacy screeners, RICAS, and SAT.
  • Support implementation of evidence-based literacy practices as endorsed by the What Works Clearinghouse. 
  • Meet with a LEA/CBO liaison at regular intervals. 
  • Attend up to ten instructional days of professional learning through RI READS Coaches Corps, including launch sessions in August 2025.
  • Receive coaching through the RI READS Coaches Corps 
  • Plan and implement instructional coaching cycles with all staff (e.g., General Education, Content Areas, MLL, DAS, Interventionists). 
  • Facilitate professional learning to support staff in planning evidence-based comprehensive literacy instruction (e.g., common planning time structures). 
  • Utilize the “look-fors” tool to guide professional learning and instructional decisions (not for evaluation purposes).
  • Submit all coaching cycle data
