The Opportunity
This role is an exciting opportunity to serve as a senior leader within a diverse and dynamic team committed to the audacious task of transforming public education in Providence Public Schools. By any measure, and over many years, the Providence Public School District (PPSD) has failed to deliver on its most fundamental obligation: fair and equitable access to a rigorous education for all children. The time for change is now and the district is in the process of a game-changing transformation with the support of the larger Providence community.
The Role
This is an outstanding opportunity for an education leader with experience managing many facets of an urban public school organization during a period of significant change. The Principal Supervisor will report directly to the Chief of Staff to the Superintendent, and work closely with the senior administrative team to support the transformation of public education in Providence.
The Principal Supervisor will oversee and manage the rollout of a comprehensive set of training, tools, and resources to principals, ensuring that they receive just-in-time support as needed. This position will work closely with a select cohort of principals to assess their needs and translate those into resources that can be deployed by the central office. The Transformation Officer will ensure that all Professional Development (PD) data is accurately entered into the district’s Learning Management System, maintaining the integrity of the data. Additionally, the Principal Supervisor may spearhead programs focused on professional learning, attendance, and discipline, designed to improve student outcomes, with a particular focus on supporting teachers of color.
EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master’ s degree, or formal training in Educational Leadership preferred;
- Three years of increasingly responsible experience in classroom teaching, with three years of related management or supervisory experience.
CERTIFICATE / LICENSE REQUIRED:
- Building Level Administrator Certification or Superintendent certification
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:
Key Responsibilities
Supervise, Develop and Evaluate Principals to Improve Student Achievement
- Develop the capacity of each principal and school leadership team to be strong instructional leaders who use the PPSD coherence model, HQCIM, and data for continuous improvement toward the 2030 District and state goals;
- Engage as a coach to drive cycles of inquiry with their principals and school leadership teams;
- Ensure each school leader leads and monitors continuous cycles of improvement to improve student outcomes and increase school accountability ratings;
- Supports school level roll-out and implementation of district policies and procedures;
- Develop the ability of principals and their instructional leadership teams to develop, implement and monitor an improvement plan that helps meet student achievement goals. This includes assisting principals and their teams in engaging in root cause analyses, developing theories of action and building coherent multi-year strategies in the context of PPSD’ s overall strategy and theory of action;
- Assess the leadership capacity of each principal and their leadership teams (including teacher leaders and assistant principals);
- Provide frequent, actionable feedback to assist principals and their leadership teams in improving in their leadership practice and achieve better results;
- Assess principal quality within the school team and effectively plan for, facilitate and/or execute school leadership transitions as needed (including succession planning), in consultation and partnership with the Office of Human Resources;
- Identify, recruit and engage in the selection of new principals able to successfully lead school improvement efforts;
- Develop a high-performing community of principals who leverage one another’s strengths and support one another in achieving shared goals. This may include via principal meetings, peer mentoring, and/or individual job-embedded coaching focused on instructional leadership.
Further Develop a Network Team that Meets the Needs of their Students and the Community
- Ensure School Principals regularly monitor performance on priority district achievement metrics to assist in assessing leadership capacity, progress toward implementation of key improvement efforts, and the results in achieving student achievement gains;
- Lead staff in fostering meaningful relationships with families and community stakeholders to create a strong community structure to support the learning of all students;
- Monitor the provision of differentiated resources and support to schools in accordance with the needs of all students, including multilingual learners and differently abled learners, instead of a one-size fits all approach;
- Leverage the resources of Central Office departments and teams and coordinate their delivery in the best interests of its schools;
- Pursue the district’s goals for diversity, equity and inclusion, with a particular focus on ensuring equitable access to high-quality instruction for students and closing the achievement gap;
- Collaborate with the Executive Cabinet in developing communication systems that ensure the smooth flow of information (both vertically and horizontally), enable energy to be concentrated on the highest-priority goals for each school, and ensure best practices are shared across schools;
- Manage and resolve high priority issues focused on safety and crisis management;
- Develop a team of support-providers and problem-solvers to address stakeholder concerns and complete administrative responsibilities;
- Participate in district meetings serving as a liaison between school leaders and district departments.
Manage Administrative Supports to Schools
- Continuously review district policies and procedures in order to make recommendations to improve upon and standardize processes;
- Inspect and analyze operations within schools to take action to continuously improve procedures, services and support to schools and work locations;
- Establish cooperative relationships with district departments, employees, and suppliers effectively communicating and interpreting policies and procedures as necessary;
- Recommend hiring, transfer, and termination of school principals and other administrative personnel to Chief of Staff to the Superintendent;
- Assist in the preparation and issuance of various internal monthly and annual reports that accurately represent schools’ activities;
- Represent the Superintendent at meetings with other school district departments, suppliers and other public agencies, pertaining to the division;
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Lead Central Office Initiatives to Strengthen Principal Support
Each Principal Supervisor will be assigned a portfolio of 6–8 schools to support and guide school leadership. In addition, Principal Supervisors may be responsible for overseeing and advancing key focus areas in specialized programs, such as career and technical education, strategy and transformation, attendance, alternative learning, or professional learning.
- Principal Hiring & Professional Learning
- Lead the principal hiring process to ensure alignment with district priorities and the PPSD instructional model;
- Collaborate with the HR Recruitment team;
- Provide continuous support for a subset of principals focused on their professional growth in the areas of supervision and evaluation.
Leverage experiences from working with principals to develop and refine tools, training, and resources for all principals across the district. - Work collaboratively with all Transformation Officers and Teaching & Learning to create and implement induction programs that align with the PPSD instructional model and district priorities.
- Oversee Professional Development (PD) workshops for both principals and teachers in collaboration with Teaching and Learning.
- Oversee Professional Development (PD) workshops/days for the 1033 and 1339 unions.
- Oversee PD systems and compliance, maintaining the integrity of PD data.
- Facilitate training workshops aligned with district priorities and needs.
- Develop tools and templates.
- Attendance
- Work closely with K-12 schools, district staff, and school administrators and teachers to support reducing chronic absenteeism and truancy.
- Lead the attendance policy committee in the revision of the current district attendance policy.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to develop procedures, systems, and structures more monitoring chronic absenteeism in all schools.
- Work closely with schools’ Attendance Teams to increase attendance rates and reduce chronic absenteeism and truancy.
- Providence real-time data support and address chronic absenteeism, truancy, and suspensions.
- Provide weekly in-person support for K-12 Attendance Teams and ensure Teams are analyzing attendance data daily and weekly.
- Ensure schools are utilizing and incorporating attendance interventions such as daily phone calls and home visits to address absenteeism.
- Monitor data for graduation rates and freshmen on track to drive support initiatives;
- Collaborate with the Director of School Counseling to provide support to counselors in assisting in reducing chronic absenteeism and truancy.
- Develop and maintain expertise about current trends and best practices in the area of absenteeism and truancy.
- Design and deliver appropriate professional development training on interventions that support increasing attendance and decreasing absenteeism and truancy.
- Monitor progress with TAP initiatives that are focused on attendance.
- Alternative Learning
- Lead strategy and programming for Over-Aged/Under-Credited students, including Alternative Learning Plans and expanded pathway partnerships.
- Design and oversee a comprehensive districtwide Credit Recovery program (including summer) to accelerate graduation outcomes.
- Establish and maintain clear policies, including a district Credit Recovery handbook, grading practices, and course completion expectations.
- Evaluate and approve credit recovery platforms and ensure alignment with instructional standards and student needs.
- Develop and monitor systems for credit attainment, audits, transcripts, and program timelines.
- Ensure strong implementation across schools, including staff training, accurate rosters, student progress monitoring, and teacher feedback.
- Partner with School Counseling and Teaching & Learning to align graduation planning, student supports, and program expectations.
- Oversee data systems and reporting to track effectiveness and ensure compliance, including NCAA eligibility requirements
- Career and Technical Education

- Oversee the Office of Career and Technical Education budget, including staff allocations and expenditure monitoring.
- Lead and coordinate the work of school-based coordinators.
- Develop and manage the annual CTE plan for submission to the Rhode Island Department of Education, including required financial and program reports.
- Supervise preparation of Board of Education documentation to secure and manage funding.
- Stay current on CTE trends, workforce needs, and broader educational changes to inform programming.
- Collaborate with internal departments and community stakeholders to design responsive programs, facilities, and resources.
- Oversee curriculum development and revisions for career and technical education programs.
- Plan and coordinate division-wide professional development activities.
- Develop and monitor a comprehensive CTE plan for the division.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS:
- Ideal candidates will have significant building leadership experience as well as some previous experience in managing principals;
- Experience in public school administration or other large diverse organizations preferred;
- Educational leadership, School Principal, or Administration/Supervision preferred;
- Strong analytical, reasoning, and communication skills required.
