Cable Assembly Technician III

We are hiring a certified, independent bench technician to build complex cable and harness assemblies from released drawings. Soldering is the core craft of this role in addition to wire-to-terminal, connector solder cups, and shield/braid work, alongside crimping, backshell installation, and finishing.

At Protocable, you have direct influence over system changes and improvements. This includes but is not limited to work instructions, quality program, training curriculum, and workmanship culture. The results are visibly yours.

This position is the founding workmanship authority for our production floor. You will build the first articles of complex cable assemblies directly from drawings and specifications. This role will have the influence to improve and change designs and turn those builds into clear, repeatable work instructions that establish production standards. You own day-to-day quality control, maintain internal processes, and serve as our in-house IPC/WHMA-A-620 trainer, certifying and mentoring other technicians that are onboarded.

Current IPC/WHMA-A-620 certification is required at hire.

Job Description and Responsibilities

First Article & Process Development

• Develop first-article and prototype assemblies built from raw drawings and specifications, with no existing process to lean on
• Create work instructions, build aids, and accompanying setups that Technician I/II can execute repeatably
• Develop and strengthen Protocable's internal processes which include: Production procedures, inspection procedures, rework/repair standards, training curriculum, and documentation practices
• Contribute and implement process improvements based on your recommendations: Tooling, fixturing, layout, and workflow, etc.

Quality Control

• Execute day-to-day quality control on the floor: In-process and final inspection to IPC/WHMA-A-620 acceptance criteria
• Perform inspection of incoming connectors, wire, and materials against drawings and specifications
• Produce and resolve discrepancy reports; root-cause and corrective action on recurring defects
• Perform continuity/resistance and HIPOT testing, pull tests, and inspection records; lot/serial traceability on travelers and quality records
• Establish and implement inspection checklists, acceptance criteria documents, calibration tracking, and quality records structure

Production

• Execute the full range of assembly work to A-620 acceptance criteria: soldering (terminals, solder cups, braid, magnified work), machine/hand crimping, backshells, shield termination, potting, molded boots
• Provide necessary troubleshooting of failed or marginal builds and execute rework and repair to standard

Leadership & Training

• Provide In-house IPC/WHMA-A-620 training: deliver workmanship training and certify Technician I/II to meet standards
• Provide Day-to-day mentoring as needed; you’ll serve as the floor's workmanship reference and first escalation point

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED plus 5 years of cable/harness assembly experience, including first-article or prototype builds (strong candidates with less tenure but demonstrable first-article ownership will be considered)
• Current IPC/WHMA-A-620 certification required at hire, with CIT (Certified IPC Trainer) status or willingness to obtain CIT within 3 months through employer-sponsored training
• Expert-level soldering and full command of A-620 acceptance criteria
• Familiarity with common connector families (D38999/circular mil-spec, Molex, etc.)
• Familiarity with measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers for quality assurance
• Independent reading and proficient interpretation of technical drawings, schematics, and wire lists
• Quality control or inspection experience: inspecting to A-620 acceptance criteria, writing discrepancy reports, and dispositioning workmanship
• Experience training or leading other assemblers
• Strong problem solving and communication skills
• Excellent time management and prioritization skills
• U.S. person status (U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident), required for access to ITAR-controlled hardware and technical data

Additional Desired Qualifications

• IPC J-STD-001 certification; space addenda (J-STD-001ES, A-620 Space Addendum) or NASA-STD-8739.3/.4 familiarity
• Coax/twinax, ribbon cable, or RF assembly experience
• Overmolding / low-pressure injection molding process experience
• Potting and backshell sealing experience
• AS9100 or ISO 9001 environment experience; lean manufacturing exposure
• Test development experience (hipot, automated continuity testers)
• Language Skills: English Preferred

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

• Comfortability with prolonged sitting and/or standing at a production bench for up to 8 hours a day
• Must be able to operate and engage in various movements including, but not limited to, repetitive hand motions, cutting, pulling, reaching, handling, lifting, lowering, and kneeling.
• Regularly lift up to 10 lbs, frequently up to 25 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs
• This role requires the physical ability to accurately distinguish and differentiate between specific color-coded indicators (such as red, green, and blue wires or signals) to ensure operational safety and compliance
• Demonstrate visual acuity for work under magnification
• Work near loud machinery and shop chemicals (solvents, potting compounds, solder with fume extraction); Necessary PPE provided
