Chief Assistant Solicitor-General

Duties

The Barrow County Solicitor-General’s Office is looking to hire a Chief Assistant Solicitor-General. The following duties include but not limited to:

This position provides assistance to the Solicitor-General by representing the State in all stages of court proceedings. This includes supervising the gathering of information, identifying correct witnesses, making sure correct charges are brought, preparing accusations for arraignment, preparing necessary motions and notices, and preparing cases for trial. The Chief Assistant Solicitor will evaluate and prosecute misdemeanor criminal offenses and traffic violations in the pursuit of justice and promote the safety of residents.

Major Duties

  • Serves as a prosecuting attorney in the Barrow County State Court.
  • Assists Solicitor-General with the supervision of Assistant Solicitors-General, support staff, and interns; assists Solicitor-General with personnel decisions as requested.
  • Assists Solicitor-General with coordination of court calendars and case-load evaluation.
  • Responsible for the prosecution of all misdemeanor cases occurring in Barrow County, including crimes against persons, property crimes, and traffic violations.
  • Evaluates violations of criminal law: reviews warrants and/or citations issued for violations; reviews incident reports, witness statements, videos, lab reports, photographs, and other pertinent information; conducts case research; notes specifics of dates, previous offenses, and other related information; determines validity and weight of evidence and determines specific criminal law violations.
  • Prepares accusations when the office receives warrants or citations from law enforcement agencies; reviews accusations for accuracy, completeness, and legality; determines if additional investigation is necessary.
  • Determines victim impact when applicable: evaluates the potential for future harm to the victim; reviews elements of the case and compares to any changes to the law; determines restitution amount; and calculates the defendant’s potential to succeed on probation versus the need to protect the community or specific individual.
  • Provides plea recommendations for violations; formulates plea offers based on the law, nature of the violation, the criminal history of the defendant, and any other related factors; and provides discovery and plea offers to defendants and defense counsel for resolution of the established cases.
  • Appears in court for arraignments, traffic court, bond hearings, motion hearings, plea hearings, bench trials, and jury trials.
  • Researches case law in preparation for motions; subpoenas witnesses, conducts motion hearings, and argues motions to the court.
  • Prepares cases for jury trials; reviews cases to ensure all witnesses are subpoenaed, prepares appropriate motions, notices, and jury charges.
  • Drafts appellate briefs and motions and argues cases before the appellate courts as required.
  • Communicates with defense counsel or prosecuting attorneys, judges, law enforcement, investigators, legal support staff, witnesses, experts, probation officers, supervisor, government officials, other employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, present or exchange information, provide legal counsel and interpretation, or resolve problems.
  • Maintains current, comprehensive knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, principles, and practices relating to the prosecution of criminal offenses; maintains an awareness of new trends and advances in the profession; attends workshops training sessions and meetings as needed.
  • Coordinates with community partners and the public to promote criminal justice efforts: educates and informs the community about the criminal justice system; conducts and attends meetings with schools, government organizations, interest groups, or other community partners; participates in task forces and review committees; and responds to inquiries from law enforcement, the courts, other agencies, the district attorney’s office, the public defender’s office, legislators, and the

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited school of law.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Georgia.
  • Current membership in the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of Georgia.
  • At least five years of trial experience.
  • Prosecutorial experience is preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrate considerable knowledge of state laws, court proceedings, and rules of evidence, as well as the policies and procedures of a Solicitor-General’s Office.
  • Must show an ability to communicate and work with the public, judges, and court personnel.
  • Proficiency with computers, electronic media, and case management systems.
  • Must have adequate oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly skilled in applying legal principles.
  • Knowledge of municipal government law.
  • Knowledge of civil rights statutes and laws.
  • Knowledge and experience with analytical techniques used to collect and interpret data.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing by preparing precise reports and presentations.
  • Effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to organize work in a logical, effective, and efficient manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interface effectively with all levels of county management.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong ability to speak in public.
  • Accurate and detail-oriented.
  • Easily adapts to changes in the work environment.
  • Ability to establish priorities.
  • Exhibits sound and accurate judgment.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and handle confidential matters.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in an office and in a courtroom, sometimes for long periods. Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, and occasional lifting of light objects are necessary functions of the position.

Salary Range: $82,599.00 – $132,159.00
