What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Harness Engineer position at Proper Voltage?
Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
About Proper Voltage
Proper Voltage is unlocking the next generation of battery technology across robotics, data centers, and defense.
We're building intelligent battery systems that make advanced chemistries (sodium-ion, lithium-titanate, lithium-silicon) work in products that were never designed for them. Humanoid robots can upgrade power systems without redesigning their entire platform. Data centers get safer, cheaper backup power. Drones and autonomous vehicles get higher energy density without lengthy integration cycles.
If you want to work on hard engineering problems that matter this is the place.
Job Overview
As the Lead Harness Engineer at Proper Voltage you will build the connections that tie our products together. You’ll own the end-to-end design, integration and validation of power and data distribution across both our high and low voltage products. This role is responsible for architecting all wiring harnesses, busbars, and grounding strategies from early concept through production launch.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys deep technical ownership, understands how designs behave in the real world, thrives in a start-up environment and wants to play a key role in building a business rather than just delivering designs to requirement.
What You'll Do
The Pay Range For This Role Is
140,000 - 170,000 USD per year(Carlsbad Office)

You’ll own the end-to-end design, integration and validation of power and data distribution across both our high and low voltage products. This role is responsible for architecting all wiring harnesses, busbars, and grounding strategies from early concept through production launch.
This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys deep technical ownership, understands how designs behave in the real world, thrives in a start-up environment and wants to play a key role in building a business rather than just delivering designs to requirement.
What You'll Do
- Own the design and integration of high and low-voltage wiring harnesses, power and signal busbars and grounding and bonding strategies
- Define system-level power distribution architecture, including current paths, redundancy, isolation, and fault protection considerations
- Partner with EE and systems teams to translate electrical requirements into physical interconnect solutions
- Create and maintain harness designs. Define wire types, gauges, insulation, shielding, routing, strain relief, and protection. Manage harness schematics, formboards and pinouts.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards
- Design busbars for high-current applications, including material selection, cross-section sizing (for current, thermal rise, and voltage drop) and mechanical mounting and isolation.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers on packaging, thermal interfaces, and structural support
- Support validation via analysis, test, or supplier data (thermal, mechanical, electrical)
- Serve as the technical point of contact for harness and busbar topics across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and suppliers. Drive design reviews, trade studies, and risk assessments
- Support prototype builds, debug issues, and lead design iterations through launch
- Partner with suppliers and contract manufacturers to optimize design for manufacture and design for service (where applicable).
- 5 or more years of experience in electrical interconnect design (harnesses and busbars)
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
- Proven track record or bringing harness designs to market for medium to high volume applications
- Experience working through prototype and production cycles and support pre-production builds
- Strong technical background with comfort in multidisciplinary environments.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in cross-functional teams.
- Prior experience with (any of):
- Battery back up systems and stationery storage devices
- Electric vehicles, robotics or aerospace products
- Industrial equipment or power electronics
- Experience in startups or high-growth technology companies, demonstrating adaptability and versatility across engineering disciplines.
- Experience managing external suppliers or contract manufacturers
- Company Equity
- Health, dental, vision insurance
- Flexible PTO with a generous holiday policy
- Hybrid-friendly work schedule, with travel as needed
