Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Residential Assistant to join our team here at our homeless shelter. The ideal candidate will have to have at least three to five years' experience in social services work or volunteered experience with individuals who are in need. This role requires a blend of empathy, patience, and professionalism to support our guests.

Duties

(1) To relieve the 1st shift Residential Assistant (6:45pm-11:00pm). Arrive at 10:45 p.m. for shift;

(2) Report to the Residential Specialist on duty and communicate about the evening routine, receive updates on special circumstances regarding shelter guests, be aware of number and names of expected guests, and any special instructions for your shift;

(3) To receive a verbal update from the 1st shift RA, read your assistant log since the last time you were on duty. Make any comments in log throughout your shift that may assist the next assistant on duty;

(4) To greet the volunteers for the shift. Check that your volunteer(s) have signed in their log. Encourage them to give written feedback about their experience in the comments section. Briefly review morning routine. Assign duties and assist them in morning cleaning;

(5) To launder sheets, towels, and return to supply room as needed;

(6) To mop lobby, laundry room, staff restroom in shelter, pantry kitchen/hall and main kitchen floors;

(7) To sanitize and restock unused totes and laundry baskets. Cover pillows with vinyl pillow covers. Bag up items for Property Manager of guests not returning;

(8) Check inventory once/week. Use maintenance request form for requests for requests for supplies. Leave copy in Property Manager’s mailbox;

(9) To oversee volunteer(s) from 11:00pm-7:00am. Make sure they are comfortable with their duties, and with interacting with our guests. Thank them in the morning and help them to feel productive;

(10) To monitor and oversee the site while the Residential Specialist is resting. Check dorms every 15 minutes at least. Only answer the door to expected guests. New arrivals or persons expected to be problematic must be accompanied by RS.

(11) To lead or appoint another person to lead an evening devotional or prayer before departure in the morning if the Residential Specialist is not available.

(12) To provide informal support (care and guidance) to the shelter guests. Report any unusual circumstances including property issues to the Residential Specialist immediately.

(13) To make sure that the Rules of Conduct are being followed and maintain consistency on site. RS to enforce rules.

(14) To maintain good communication with the volunteers and staff regarding shelter guests’ activities.

(15) To relieve RS at FMF at 5:00 a.m. daily as needed. To accompany guest parents who are at PH and transition them to FMF in a.m. as situations require. Oversee morning routine including distribution of guest medicine totes when no FMF RA is scheduled.

(16) To oversee the provision of breakfast in the dining hall. Supervise volunteers in the distribution and clean up of food. Be sure it is served in a sanitary way (buffet style). Encourage volunteers wear gloves and date all leftovers. Coffee should be made in large coffee pot.

(17) Wake all including women at 5:45 a.m., check periodically to make sure guests are awake. Report to RS if issues;

(18) To supervise in the provision of PH chores for shelter guests. Be sure all guests have signed up for a chore and know how to implement that chore in the morning (supplies, procedure);

(19) To sweep and mop the Residential Specialist’s Office, Kitchen, Kitchen Hallway, Stairwell, Volunteer Restroom, Dining Hall and Lobby each shift;

(20) To secure a replacement for your shift if necessary and to report changes in scheduling to your supervisor and the on-call supervisor;

(21) To distribute packed lunches (to guests on list only) and McD’s vouchers to shelter guests prior to departure;

(22) To monitor or assign a monitor to the client entrance/exit door in the morning;

(23) Shovel/salt walkway/ramps prior to 5:30 a.m. for morning volunteer;

(24) To collect used blankets if bin is full prior to laundry day.

(25) To provide general straightening, remove clutter, organize and clean areas in shelter as needed.

(26) To perform a final walk through by checking all lights, water, coffee pots are shut off and beds to ensure all guests have exited accordingly. Check general cleanliness of shelter and that all items are off floor for tours. Monitor exit of volunteers to parking lot/cars in a.m. Walk out with RS and/or volunteers.

(27) To attend mandatory monthly staff meetings held by the Social Services and/or Executive Director. It is encouraged that you attend quarterly Ecumenical Shelter Network meetings and participate in the annual evaluation of the shelter each year.

(28) To be accountable to the Residential Specialist on duty, Social Services Director, the Executive Director, and the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees.

(29) To be familiar with and to abide by the spirit and content of the “Laws and Regulations Governing the Practice of Counseling and Social Work”, State of Ohio including the Code of Ethics of the American Association for Counseling and Development, and the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers.

(30) To promote the mission of Project Hope for the Homeless: to respectfully and compassionately empower persons who are homeless with hope by providing emergency and transitional shelter, care and guidance together with the community. And vision: to be a solution in helping persons who are homeless to thrive and reach their most abundant life, inspired by the love of Jesus.
