We are seeking a dependable and mechanically inclined Maintenance Assistant to join our maintenance team and help support approximately 35 residential locations throughout Oakland County. This full-time position works under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and assists with a wide variety of maintenance, repair, moving, and facility support activities. Progressive Lifestyles provides the tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned job duties.

This role involves frequent travel between residential sites and may begin the workday either at Progressive Lifestyles' administrative office in Waterford or directly at assigned field locations. Maintenance Assistants regularly work in and around residential homes and support locations serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Successful candidates will demonstrate professionalism, respect, and positive interpersonal skills when interacting with individuals served, direct care staff, administrative personnel, contractors, and community partners.

Candidates should possess mechanical aptitude, enjoy hands-on work, and be comfortable performing a broad range of maintenance, repair, facility support, and property upkeep activities while working independently and as part of a small maintenance team.

Essential Activities:

  • Assist with the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of approximately 35 residential and administrative locations throughout Oakland County under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Perform a variety of general maintenance and repair tasks including painting, appliance replacement, hardware installation and removal, drywall repair, minor carpentry, fixture replacement, and basic plumbing and electrical repairs that do not require licensed tradespersons.
  • Respond to, complete, and document maintenance work orders using company computer systems, email, and related technology.
  • Travel frequently throughout Oakland County to perform maintenance activities, transport materials and equipment, and support agency operations at residential and administrative locations.
  • Move, load, unload, assemble, disassemble, and transport furniture, appliances, donations, maintenance supplies, equipment, and other agency property.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections, identify maintenance concerns and safety hazards, and communicate findings to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with individuals receiving services, direct support staff, supervisors, administrative personnel, contractors, vendors, and community partners while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Maintain maintenance tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas in a safe, organized, and professional manner.
  • Assist with seasonal, exterior, and grounds maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude and practical problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, and common maintenance equipment.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to navigate software applications, email, and electronic work order systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to completing work accurately, safely, and efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while contributing effectively as part of a team.
  • Positive interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate professionally and respectfully with individuals receiving services, staff, vendors, contractors, and community partners.
  • Dependable work habits, sound judgment, and a commitment to professionalism, confidentiality, and agency standards.

Prerequisites (education, experience etc.,):

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to successfully complete required criminal background checks and TB testing.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred. Relevant maintenance, construction, facilities, or related experience may be considered in lieu of formal education requirements.
  • Previous maintenance, facilities, construction, remodeling, handyman, or related experience preferred but not required.
  • Basic knowledge of common residential maintenance practices and repair techniques preferred.
  • Ability to travel throughout Oakland County during the workday.
  • Ability to work a full-time Monday through Friday schedule consistent with Progressive Lifestyles, Inc. operational needs.
  • Because limited on-the-job training is available, candidates should possess basic maintenance knowledge and mechanical aptitude upon hire.
  • Available 40 hours a week matching Progressive Lifestyles, Inc., Administrative Office hours.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to travel in the community or to predetermined locations where pertinent to the job role and scheduled activities.Ability to communicate promptly verbally, in writing and via all communications tools utilized.
  • Ability to push, pull, move, and transport furniture, appliances, donated items, maintenance supplies, and equipment, including heavier items with assistance or appropriate equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and climb ladders for extended periods while performing maintenance activities.
  • Ability to independently operate personal computers and related digital devices.
