POSITION SUMMARY
Experienced cosmetic formulator specializing in the development of personal care products including soaps, cleansing bars, shampoos, conditioners, and oral care formulations. Skilled in ingredient functionality, surfactant chemistry and systems, sensory evaluation, and organoleptic testing to create high-performance products that meet consumer expectations, regulatory standards, and manufacturing requirements. Results-driven R&D formulator with expertise in cosmetic and personal care products. Additional duties will be to contribute to and support corporate quality initiatives ensuring the Company has only the highest quality products.
OTHER ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for quality and continuous improvement within the job scope
- Develop and refine formulations for soaps, syndet bars, shampoos, conditioners, and toothpaste products
- Perform stability, compatibility, viscosity, pH, and preservative efficacy testing during product development
- Source and evaluate raw materials, including surfactants and active ingredients
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to scale formulas from laboratory batches to full production
- Troubleshoot formulation and processing issues related to separation, discoloration, fragrance stability, and product performance
- Ensure compliance with cosmetic and oral care regulatory requirements and labeling standards
- Maintain formulation records, specifications, testing documentation, and batch reports
- Corporate Meeting Involvement
- Testing – General:
- Maintain testing documentation files
- Verify formulas documented in manufacturing software system with Formulation Sheet
- Coordinate signing off of all new/changed formulas
- Create test sheets (Excel software application)
- Issue tests
- Review test results with PD Management
- Submit PRE parameters to Planning and Production
- Testing – New Product:
- Perform tests. Liaison with Planning, Production, and QC
- Conduct bench-top trials, pilot runs, and production scale-ups to ensure product consistency and manufacturability
- Develop and maintain documentation and forms
- Establish required product specifications
- Testing – Raw Materials:
- Research emerging ingredients, nutrition trends, and flavor profiles to support innovation and competitive product development
- Review results of raw material evaluation
- Assist QC in method development for material analysis
- Provide recommendations to PD Manager on feasibility of use of raw materials and/or make suggestions for possible changes
- Generate proposed material specifications and edit as needed
- Production/Blending:
- Create Dispensing and Blending Recipes for all blends
- Review and/or sign all Blending Batch Tickets
- Assist Production to resolve raw material issues in manufacturing
- Evaluate production processes using statistical process-control methods in conjunction with Production staff
- Investigate/Track production issues involving raw materials and archive for future reference
- Current Product Evaluation
- Characterize current products
- Evaluate ingredient functionality, allergen considerations, and compatibility within various product systems
- Identify methods to improve products from a raw material aspect
- Continually evaluate science, raw materials and trends of nutritional science for existing product improvement
- Generate and pro:
- New product formulations
- Existing product formulations
- "FIX" formulas to deplete excess inventories of discontinued formulas, blended powders, and raw materials
- Cleaning Codes and Validation:
- Assign cleaning codes
- Coordinate with Production and QC to validate cleaning requirements
- Maintain formulas documented in software system
- Manufacturing Software System:
- Input formulas
- Input new raw materials
- Maintain formulas documented in software system
- Ad Hoc Projects:
- Assist Director on various projects as assigned
- All other outside projects shall be approved by Director, CEO and PD Manager
- Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Duties are performed primarily in a smoke-free office environment
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry or related field in science
- Minimum of 2 – 5 years of formulations experience in the cosmetic, personal care industry or similar field
- Background in science, health, or nutrition
- Must be detail oriented, highly organized and possess strong communication and technical skills
- Must be able to interact effectively and professionally with individuals throughout the company, both verbally and in writing
- Analytical ability is required in order to gather and summarize data for reports, recommend solutions to various production issues, and prioritize work
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and demonstrated ability to juggle, organize, and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands, and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate
- Good understanding of the impact of food and nutrients on health
- Working knowledge of computers and aptitude to learn new programs
- Proficient in MS Office
