Position Summary

The Screen Printing Press Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining screen printing equipment to produce high-quality decorated apparel accurately and efficiently. This is a hands-on production role requiring attention to detail, technical skill, good judgment, and pride in the craft. Operators are expected to take ownership of the work coming off their press, meet production expectations, identify and resolve problems, and communicate proactively when issues could affect quality or schedule.

Primary Responsibilities
Press Setup & Operation

Review the daily production schedule and job specifications to understand priorities and plan work efficiently.

Set up and operate automatic screen printing equipment safely and according to company standards.

Load and configure screens, squeegees, flood bars, inks, platens, flashes, dryers, and other equipment required for each job.

Register artwork accurately and adjust press settings to achieve the desired print result.

Verify garments, artwork, print location, ink colors, quantities, and other job specifications before beginning production.

Produce and inspect the first-off sample and obtain required approval before proceeding with the full production run.

Break down completed jobs efficiently and prepare the press for the next scheduled job.

Quality & Accuracy

Take ownership of the quality and accuracy of every product produced on the press.

Continuously monitor registration, placement, ink coverage, opacity, color consistency, curing, and overall print quality throughout each run.

Watch for garment defects, lint, pinholes, screen issues, contamination, or other conditions that could affect print quality.

Make necessary press adjustments when problems occur and stop production when a quality issue cannot be resolved at the press.

Double-check that the correct garment, size, color, artwork, ink, placement, and quantity match the job specifications.

Production & Workflow

Meet established expectations for production output, quality, and accuracy.

Work with urgency while maintaining quality; production speed should never come at the expense of producing the job correctly.

Keep job status and production information current in the company production system.

Communicate promptly with production leadership regarding delays, missing materials, screen issues, equipment problems, quality concerns, or other obstacles.

Use downtime productively by cleaning, preparing upcoming work, assisting another team member, or asking where help is needed.

Equipment, Cleanup & Safety

Maintain a clean, safe, and organized press and surrounding work area throughout the workday.

Properly remove and return inks, screens, squeegees, flood bars, tools, samples, test garments, carts, and other production materials after each job.

Perform routine press cleaning and operator-level preventative maintenance according to company standards.

Identify equipment problems early and communicate maintenance needs before they become larger production issues.

Use inks, chemicals, equipment, and production tools safely and leave the work area prepared for the next production day.

Teamwork & Communication

Work cooperatively with press assistants, catchers, screen room, ink department, art department, and production leadership to keep jobs moving efficiently.

Ask questions rather than make assumptions when job specifications are unclear.

Receive feedback and direction professionally and make adjustments when needed.

Contribute to a positive, respectful, and team-oriented production environment.

Success Factors

Craftsmanship and pride in producing clean, consistent, high-quality work.

Strong attention to detail and the ability to catch small problems before they become larger ones.

Accountability for quality, accuracy, productivity, and communication.

Efficiency in setup, production, changeovers, and use of downtime.

Problem-solving ability and sound judgment when troubleshooting common printing issues.

Reliability, professionalism, teamwork, and a willingness to continuously improve.

Qualifications & Skills

Previous screen printing or comparable production equipment experience preferred.

Working knowledge of automatic screen printing equipment and the screen printing production process.

Understanding of registration, print placement, ink behavior, squeegee pressure, flash curing, dryer settings, and related print-quality fundamentals.

Ability to read and follow production schedules, work orders, job tickets, and artwork specifications.

Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot routine printing and equipment issues.

Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment while maintaining consistent quality.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and work at production equipment for extended periods and perform repetitive production tasks safely.

Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and move throughout the production area as required.

Ability to safely lift and move boxes of garments, screens, inks, and other production supplies.

Ability to work in a production environment that may include heat, noise, and exposure to inks and cleaning products.
