The Prince William County Department of Fire & Rescue’s Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) is seeking top-quality candidates dedicated to fire prevention in both new and existing construction. We are recruiting for a Senior Construction Inspector to join a team responsible for ensuring that fire protection systems, controls, and devices comply with approved plans as well as applicable state building and fire codes.


About This Role:

The successful candidate will serve as a key point of contact for contractors, project managers, elected officials, businesses, and various county agencies that interact with the Office of the Fire Marshal. This individual will function as a subject matter expert (SME) in the Virginia Construction Code (VCC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards related to Fire and Life Safety systems, and the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (VSFPC).

The ideal candidate is a dynamic and adaptable professional capable of multitasking, de-escalating challenging situations, managing expectations, and navigating county services related to the FMO. Attention to detail, a high level of integrity, and strong communication skills are essential for success in this role.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. and 3 years’ experience in fire prevention, fire protection systems, inspections, and/or code enforcement.

Preferences:

  • Experience conducting inspections of fire and life safety systems in compliance with the Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), Virginia Construction Code (VCC) International Fire Code (IFC), Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (VSFPC), applicable NFPA standards, and established industry practices.
  • Certifications meeting NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I and II standards.
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Protection Systems Inspector certification through DHCD.
  • Certified 3B Inspector credential from an accepted Board (ICC or NCPCCI).
  • Strong personal integrity with a proven ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, EnerGov HTML5, and IG Inspect platforms.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational abilities, with consistent performance in high-volume, deadline-driven environments.

Background checks, which may include but are not limited to: Criminal History Check, Credit History Check, Education Verification Check, License Verification Check, and/or fingerprinting may be required as posted in the job advertisement.

 Fire & Rescue Requirement: Effective October 2012, mandated by the Virginia State Board of Health 12VAC5-31-540, VA EMS Regulations require a criminal background check conducted by the Central Crime Records Exchange and the National Crime Information Center via Virginia State Police; and a driving record transcript from the individual’s state Department of Motor Vehicles.


Must possess a Driver’s License.


Certifications (Required within 18 months of hire):

  • Fire Prevention Inspector I and II (NFPA 1031, Virginia Department of Fire Programs – VDFP)
  • Fire Protection Inspector (ICC or NCPCCI 3B Certification.


Work Schedule:

This is a 37.5 hour per week, full-time non-exempt position with working hours Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm.

Starting Salary Range: $31.96-$45.42 per hour
