POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Assistant Supervisor for Special Education Administration, the Crisis Intervention Resource Teacher will provide direct support to students and teachers in response to circumstances that present behavioral challenges in assigned middle/high school. The Crisis Intervention Resource Teacher will provide technical assistance and professional development for staff members on evidence-based behavioral intervention strategies and behavioral management techniques.

Salary Range: $56,731 - $126,964

Detailed Description

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Provides instruction on social skills and self-regulation strategies for students who may be considered "at risk" behaviorally and who may need follow-up support services;
  • Serves as a resource to all school personnel for increasing the staff's knowledge and sensitivity in responding effectively to middle or high school students in crisis;
  • Consulting with administrators, teachers and parents to implement effective behavior management strategies;
  • Provides direct technical assistance to staff members who have exhausted available resources in trying to resolve conflicts with students;
  • Provides technical assistance to school teams in the development of intervention strategies for students who display challenging behaviors;
  • Providing conflict resolution intervention;
  • Assists with the development and implementation of Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans, as appropriate;
  • Providing assistance and support in designing, implementing and monitoring behavior management plans;
  • Provides training to all staff members on the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) related to appropriate discipline procedures in schools, including de-escalation techniques, defensive strategies, and safe physical restraint methods;
  • Provide training to all school staff members on positive behavior management strategies, techniques, interventions and resources;
  • Provides initial and refresher training in the Nonviolent Crisis Intervention program to school personnel;
  • Maintains required records and follows required procedures and practices; and submits state and district wide data as part of the reporting for Coordinated Early Intervening Services;
  • Attend ongoing professional development; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Demonstrated ability to assess needs and develop appropriate intervention or initial treatment strategies;
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and reassuring in crisis situations and to intervene appropriately;
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in evaluating and accessing available resources and work effectively with community resources;
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills;
  • Technical experience working with spreadsheets and databases;
  • Knowledge of discipline regulations such as Student Code of Conduct;
  • In-depth knowledge of crisis prevention procedures, with specific training through the Crisis Prevention Institute preferred;
  • Familiarity with IDEA and Section 504 requirements; and
  • Thorough knowledge of the Response to Intervention (RtI) administrative procedure;

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in an educational field; experience in a relevant field with professional, clinical experience in the provision of crisis prevention, crisis intervention, and crisis case management, or a combination of education, training, and experience indicating the possession of essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Holds or is eligible for a Standard Professional Certificate in a related field.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
