The Prince George’s County Department of The Environment is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Refuse Collections Inspector I/II, grade A10/A12 position, in the Resource Recovery Division.

About The Position

This is entry-level inspection and code enforcement work to ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, and contracts governing the collection and disposal of refuse and recycling by County contractors for multifamily properties and commercial sector businesses. At this level, incumbents perform routine refuse collection and disposal of contracted property cleaning assignments under the close supervision of a higher-level inspector within the context of established departmental policies and procedures.

About The Agency

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

Examples of Work

  • The incumbent of this position will ensure compliance with codes, ordinances and contracts governing the collection/disposal of refuse, yard waste and recyclables by County contractors and County forces. Incumbents, under general supervision, perform the full range of refuse collection assignments within the context of established Departmental policies/procedures while establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors, homeowners, and the general public.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months public contact experience in community services occupations and customer service.
  • A valid Maryland State driver’s license is required upon appointment.
  • Certification in Waste Management Best Practices, Recycling, Waste Diversion or other related waste, enforcement, and contract management course work issued by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) or other state or nationally recognized training institute.

Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred

  • Associate Degree in Business Management, Business Administration or a related subject.
