The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Junior Traffic Engineer, (Engineer 1G) grade G24 position, in the Traffic Signal and Street Lighting Section Division.

About The Position

This is an entry level professional engineering work responsible for complex engineering duties requiring the use of a wide range of engineering principles and practices in support of the review design process in the Traffic Contril Devices, Maintenance of Traffic and Street Lighting, Office of Engineering and Project Management. Duties require the application of advanced traffic engineering principles and practices in the design, review and construction of a variety of traffic and transportation projects. Work is performed under the general supervision of Section Chief, Traffic Signal and Street Lighting Division.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department. DPW&T’s workforce keeps the County’s various services moving by performing a myriad of activities which include removing snow and ice from County-maintained roadways, upgrading traffic signals, installing streetlights, clearing fallen trees, unclogging drainage inlets and maintaining stormwater management facilities, as well as performing roadway repairs ranging from potholes and sidewalk trip hazards to bridge repairs and resurfacing projects and more.

Examples of Work

  • Develops and reviews traffic engineering plans, reports, and specifications.
  • Prepares and evaluates traffic signal plans, timing, traffic control plans, roadway improvements, and traffic studies.
  • Coordinates installation and operation of traffic signals, RRFBs, CCTV, and smart traffic systems.
  • Maintains records of inspections, signal timing, and equipment inventory.
  • Analyzes transportation issues, collects data, and prepares reports with recommendations.
  • Ensures all work complies with departmental standards and is completed on schedule.
  • Assists in managing traffic engineering studies, including scheduling, data collection, and reporting.
  • Coordinates with consultants, internal teams, and external agencies.
  • Supports leadership in meetings, public hearings, and presentations.
  • Prepares reports and maintain documentation of transportation-related activities.
  • Represents the Department in project discussions and stakeholder coordination.
  • Assists in developing and managing transportation programs and initiatives.
  • Ensures designs meet safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates projects to ensure timely delivery and interagency collaboration.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in the engineering or related scientific field determined by the requirements of the position (e.g., Civil, Environmental, Transportation, Architectural, Mechanical, Fire protection, Agricultural, Agronomy, Chemical, Industrial, Construction). OR
  • A Professional Engineer (PE) License may be substituted for the degree.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II certification preferred or equivalent signal related design and operational work
