The Prince George's County Government Department of The Environment is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Equipment Operator III position, grade A17, within its Sustainable Waste Management Division.

About The Position

This is supervisory-level skilled craft work performed in support of sanitary landfill operations. Incumbents operate a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment used in landfill activities and demonstrate advanced skill and proficiency in equipment operation. Employees may provide in-house training and guidance to equipment operators while ensuring the safe and efficient use of machinery and the safety of coworkers. Work requires independent judgment, mechanical aptitude, and coordination while operating equipment in an active landfill environment that may involve interaction with the public. Duties are performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to heavy equipment, dust, and other typical landfill hazards, and require the use of appropriate safety equipment. Incumbents are considered essential employees and may be required to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed to support landfill operations.

The Department of the Environment works for a healthy, beautiful and sustainable County through programs that provide clean water, flood control, recycling and waste management, litter prevention, sustainable animal management and pet adoption in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Some of our core services include providing clean water services (Stormwater Management Division); flooding prevention for buildings and structures (Sustainability Division and Stormwater Management Division); collecting, processing and diverting waste from the County-operated landfill, commercial facilities and householders (Resource Recovery Division); providing sustainability services to reduce greenhouse gas and emission (Sustainability Division); and facilitating pet adoptions, managing an animal holding facility, issuing pet licenses, investigating cruelty complaints and conducting humane outreach and education events (Animal Services Division).

Examples of Work

  • Operates all light to heavy landfill construction equipment including, but not limited to: D-8 dozer, front-end loader (tracked or rubber tired), 10-wheel dump truck, scraper, off-road dump truck, Landfill compactor, fuel/lube truck and street flusher.
  • Supervises fill face crew and training of personnel.
  • Performs daily pre-trip/post-trip inspections and manufacturer's daily maintenance checklist procedures including, but not limited to grease, tire air pressure, engine fluid, hydraulic fluid levels and fuel quantity. Maintains fluid levels to meet operational standards.
  • Cleans assigned vehicle daily.
  • Wears/uses appropriate safety protection such as safety goggles, gloves, headgear, safety shoes, respirator, etc.
  • Willingly and cooperatively performs tasks and duties, which may not be specifically listed in the position description, but are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years as an Equipment Operator II or completion of a standard grade school course.
  • Three (3) years of experience operating light to heavy power equipment.
  • A valid Class A, Class B, or equivalent commercial driver's license (CDL) with mandatory endorsements is required upon appointment in order to perform job-related duties and responsibilities.
  • Candidate must successfully complete equipment/vehicle performance testing for equipment/vehicles associated with this class of work.
