Job Summary
Prime Construction & Asphalt is seeking a skilled and reliable Asphalt Laborer/Backup Roller Operator to join our crew. This hybrid role is crucial for the success of our paving projects, requiring proficiency in operating various types of asphalt rollers while also actively supporting the ground crew with general labor tasks. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of asphalt experience, a strong work ethic, a commitment to safety, and the ability to thrive in a demanding outdoor construction environment.
Responsibilities
- Asphalt Roller Operation:
- Operate various types of asphalt rollers (e.g., vibratory rollers, pneumatic tire rollers, static rollers) safely and efficiently to achieve proper compaction and density of asphalt mixes.
- Follow established rolling patterns and techniques to ensure a smooth and uniform surface finish.
- Monitor asphalt temperature and roller performance, making adjustments as needed.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the roller, including checking fluid levels, greasing, and reporting any necessary repairs or malfunctions.
- Asphalt Laborer Duties:
- Assist the paving crew with all phases of asphalt work, including site preparation, shoveling, raking, and spreading hot asphalt mixture.
- Perform handwork around obstacles, edges, and irregular areas to ensure a neat finish.
- Operate various hand tools and small power tools safely (e.g., shovels, rakes, brooms, tampers, plate compactors).
- Assist in setting up and tearing down traffic control devices, signs, and cones.
- Help maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored.
- Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and established construction protocols.
- Communicate effectively with crew members, foremen, and supervisors regarding operational flow and safety concerns.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support project completion.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of verifiable experience in asphalt paving, specifically including operating asphalt rollers.
- Proven ability to operate various types of asphalt rollers safely and efficiently.
- Familiarity with other general asphalt laborer duties.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including standing, walking, bending, shoveling, lifting (up to 75 lbs repeatedly), and working in hot and cold weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and a reliable, punctual attendance record.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from supervisors.
- Commitment to safety on the job site.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to and from job sites in the Caldwell, ID area.
- OSHA 10-hour construction safety certification is a plus (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
