We are currently seeking a Director, Building Services to join our Indianapolis office and lead critical plan review and inspection services across Indiana and Kentucky.
What You’ll Do:
In this role, you’ll ensure the safety, compliance, and quality of construction projects, from new builds and renovations to occupancy changes, by applying your deep expertise in statewide building codes, fire protection standards, and accessibility requirements.
This is a leadership position for a professional with 10 years of experience as a plan examiner or building inspector, including at least 3 years managing teams or offices. You’ll oversee plan reviews, perform on-site inspections, guide code compliance for architects and contractors, and manage contracts, budgets, and client relationships. With strong technical knowledge, certified credentials, and a proven ability to lead, you’ll play a pivotal role in safeguarding the built environment and shaping community development across the region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Performs plan reviews and/or on-site building inspections for new construction, additions, renovations and change of occupancy. Plan Reviews and Inspections are performed in accordance with the adopted statewide building codes.
- Prepares and submits technical documentation regarding plan reviews and/or on-site inspection, which identifies "building" code related non-compliance.
- Performs Americans with Disabilities Title II Audits.
- Assists with drafting/amending building code ordinances and/or building permit fee ordinances.
- Provides invoice information for all projects (job numbers), assigns plan reviews from various clients, and follows up on outstanding plan reviews.
- Drafts and submits proposals and contracts, including budget, for review to client. Submit final contract for approval and signature.
- Forwards/presents proposed contract to client for approval and if requested by the client, presents contract to appropriate legislative body’s meeting(s).
- Provides code assistance on the various statewide adopted building codes and their applicability to architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners.
- Maintains all International Code Council (ICC) certifications in good standing by achieving the required number of Continuing Education Units (CEU) within the required time frame as specified by the International Code Council (ICC).
- Keeps updated information on all current contracts and proposed contracts.
- Keeps abreast of changes regarding new building code adoptions and amendments, laws, rules, regulations and procedures that relate to building projects.
What You’ll Bring:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience (10 preferred) as a plan examiner and/or building inspector with extensive and specialized knowledge of construction principles, practices and procedures and the ability to interpret and apply the various statewide adopted fire and building codes (structural, fire, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, accessibility, flammables and combustibles, exhaust hood, sprinkler systems, fire alarms system, etc., and applicable laws.

Accredited college training in any of the following area: Architecture, Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Engineering and/or Architectural Technology, Construction Management or Construction Technology.
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience managing/supervising an office of building inspectors and/or plan reviewers, including budget preparation preferred.
- Certifications Required:
- Certified Building Official (CBO)
- B-3, Building Plans Examiner
- B-2, Commercial Building Inspector
- B-1, Residential Building Inspector
- Commonwealth of Kentucky Certified Building Inspector
- All exams are based on International Code Council (ICC) exams.
- Level III within 2 years:
- B1, Residential Building Inspector
- B3, Building Plans Examiner
- M1, Residential Mechanical Inspector
- M3, Mechanical Plan Examiner
- The following certifications may substitute for work and/or accredited college training:
- International Code Council (ICC) Certifications: Building Plan Examiner. Commercial Building Inspector or Residential Building Inspector.
- National Certification Program for Code Construction Inspectors (NCPCCI) Certifications: Building General, Building Plan Review, Fire Protection General, Fire Protection Plan Review, or One- and Two-Family Dwelling General.
- Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in writing and verbally.
- Possess good customer service skills to interact with design professionals (architects and engineers), contractors, and property owners regarding various building codes, and if needed the ability to apply conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to manage schedule and priorities and look for innovative methods by which to minimum plan review turn-a-round time.
- Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite, along with Ajera for project updates.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to work under the following conditions: inclement weather, climbing steps and/or ladders, stooping, crawling, walking long distances, standing for long periods of time and awareness of heavy equipment, etc.).
