Primary Talent Partners has a new contract opening for a Discipline Engineer SME with our large power and utilities client in Charlotte, NC. This is a 12-month contract with a potential for extension.
Pay: $81.00 - $91.00/hr; W2 contract, no PTO, no Benefits. ACA-compliant supplemental package available for enrollment. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must be able to sit on Primary Talent Partners W2 without sponsorship.

The Discipline Engineer - SME provides technical expertise in power transformer health monitoring, diagnostics, and lifecycle management. This role supports reliability and asset health initiatives by analyzing condition data, identifying risks, and recommending mitigation strategies. The position works at the intersection of field operations, transformer SMEs, and asset management engineering teams to support informed maintenance and investment decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert for power transformer diagnostics, health monitoring, and condition assessment.
- Analyze transformer data to identify degradation trends, failure risks, and reliability concerns.
- Interpret diagnostic results such as Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), power factor testing, and related assessments.
- Provide recommendations for maintenance strategies, risk mitigation, and lifecycle management.
- Support project prioritization and scoping efforts using asset health insights.
- Collaborate with transformer SMEs, craft and maintenance teams, and asset management engineers.
- Translate complex technical findings into clear, actionable guidance for diverse stakeholders.
- Perform periodic field visits for onsite scoping or technical support (not a daily requirement).
- Flexible within the Carolinas service territory (Durham, NC to Anderson, SC).
- Preferred locations: Toddville, Greenville, Asheville, or Greensboro.
- Travel primarily within the western Carolinas footprint.
- Hands-on experience with power transformers through utility, industrial, manufacturing, or testing environments.
- Demonstrated experience in transformer diagnostics and condition assessment.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to work with large data sets.
- Effective communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience supporting asset health, reliability, or lifecycle management programs.
- Familiarity with industry-standard transformer testing tools and methodologies.
