Job Summary – Sterile Processing Manager
Shift: Days, 8-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks (89 days)
Role Type: Sterile Processing Manager ONLY (no techs)
Role Overview
This position leads the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) across multiple Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) entities. The manager oversees daily operations, staff supervision, training, quality assurance, inventory control, and compliance for all SPD processes including cleaning, assembly, sterilization, storage, and transport of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
The role requires strong leadership, deep SPD technical knowledge, and the ability to manage multi-site coordination, training programs, preventive maintenance, and recruitment/retention of qualified staff.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Operations
- Supervise and manage Sterile Processing staff
- Plan, organize, implement, and evaluate certification and educational programs
- Ensure proper cleaning, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and storage of instrumentation
- Oversee transport of borrowed instruments/equipment across JHM locations and clinics
- Provide training for case picking and SPD workflows
- Maintain professional standards across multiple facilities
Inventory & Equipment Management
- Maintain adequate inventory of surgical instruments and patient-care equipment
- Review and manage preventive maintenance (PM) contracts
- Maintain PM schedules and ensure equipment readiness and compliance
- Ensure knowledge and correct use of SPD instruments/equipment
Recruitment & Quality
- Participate in recruitment, retention, and development of CSP staff
- Support quality improvement and maintain regulatory compliance
Required Experience & Education
With Degree:
- Minimum 5 years professional sterile processing experience
- 3 years management experience
Without Degree:
- Minimum 9 years professional sterile processing experience
- 3 years management experience
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree
Required Certifications
Must hold ALL of the following (or acceptable equivalents):
- CRCST (IAHCSMM) or CBSPD – central service certification
- CER (Certified Endoscopic Reprocessor) or CFER
- CHL (Certified Healthcare Leader) or CSPM (Certified Sterile Processing Management)
