Position: Sterile Processing Technician

Department: Sterile Processing Department (SPD)

Shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Contract Length: 13 Weeks

Guaranteed Hours: 40 Hours/Week


Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the SPD Supervisor, the Sterile Processing Technician performs and monitors sterile and non-sterile reprocessing of diagnostic, surgical, therapeutic, and patient-care instruments, devices, supplies, and equipment. The technician is also responsible for case cart management, code cart restocking and maintenance, traction equipment setup and takedown, inventory management, and ensuring compliance with sterilization standards.



Required Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of Sterile Processing experience required.
  • 10 years of experience preferred.
  • Experience with all aspects of decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation and sterilization processes.

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or GED.


Key Responsibilities

Decontamination & Instrument Processing

  • Collect, transport, and properly handle contaminated instruments and equipment.
  • Disassemble, clean, wash, and dry instruments, devices, supplies, and equipment according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, completeness, function, and defects.
  • Maintain records of damaged, missing, or defective instruments.


Sterilization:

  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment including:
  • Steam Sterilizers
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Sterilizers
  • Gas Sterilizers
  • Perform vacuum penetration testing and biological monitoring.
  • Interpret sterilization testing results and identify abnormalities.
  • Maintain accurate sterilization documentation and records.
  • Determine appropriate sterilization methods based on instrument requirements.


Surgical Tray & Case Cart Management:

  • Assemble surgical instrument trays according to Kardex specifications.
  • Prepare and manage case carts for:
  • Operating Room (OR)
  • Delivery Room (Labor & Delivery)
  • Cardiac Cath Lab
  • Ensure all required supplies are included and documented for procedures.


Inventory & Supply Management:

  • Maintain inventory levels of instrument sets, trays, and procedure packs.
  • Store sterile and non-sterile supplies using FIFO (First-In, First-Out) methodology.
  • Verify sterility status before distribution.
  • Reprocess expired instruments and supplies as needed.


Equipment Management:

  • Clean, test, and prepare portable patient-care equipment for reuse.
  • Restock emergency crash carts and procedural carts.
  • Remove and replace expired products.
  • Assemble and disassemble traction equipment and maintain related records.


Required Skills:

  • Sterile processing and instrument reprocessing expertise.
  • Surgical tray assembly and case cart preparation.
  • Steam, gas, and hydrogen peroxide sterilization.
  • Biological and vacuum penetration testing.
  • Inventory management and supply control.
  • Instrument inspection and quality assurance.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to interpret written, verbal, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.


Ideal Candidate:

An experienced Sterile Processing Technician with 8–10 years of SPD experience who is highly proficient in decontamination, sterilization, surgical tray assembly, case cart management, biological testing, and inventory control. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment and can work independently while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and infection prevention.
