Summary
The Controls Engineer-Level II designs, creates, documents, and maintains all aspects of automation-machine controls during design, assembly and installation at the customer facility. The Controls Engineer is responsible for ensuring that assigned projects are completed within the expected timelines and that system functionality meets or exceeds the system requirements outlined in each project scope.
Engineering Duties
- Design and draft electrical schematics and draft electrical enclosures in accordance with all relevant standards.
- Oversee electrical wiring and assembly to maintain quality standards.
- Independently develop and maintain programming logic for automation.
- Write and maintain HMI programming for automation.
- Integrate multi-axis robots and their respective controllers into automation systems.
- Develop and optimize robotic motion control, programming, and communication with other system components.
- Configure and troubleshoot machine networking systems, including Ethernet-based industrial networks.
- Documentation of engineering changes.
- Generate and maintain machine Bill of Materials (BOM’s).
- Creation and maintenance of technical documentation such as machine manuals.
- Automation construction, setup, startup, troubleshoot, and debug.
- Test performance of electro-mechanical assemblies, using test instruments such as multimeters and electronic controls testing equipment.
- Analyze and record test results and prepare written testing documentation.
- Manage assigned projects, ensuring adherence to completion timelines and performance compliance.
- Continuously learn and apply new robotic programming languages, camera systems, PLCs, HMIs, and other automation technologies. Employees must demonstrate proficiency in a newly introduced technology within a reasonable time frame.
- Serve as the technical lead during the internal design, build, and debug phases of projects, providing guidance to production staff and effectively communicating with customers, project managers, and management.
- Conduct risk assessments and implement appropriate safety mechanisms, e-stops, interlocks, light curtains, and guarding as required to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned to aid Prescott Metal/EAM to achieve its goals.
Installation and Service
- Assist customers with technical phone support when needed.
- Manage machine run up through the customer approval process.
- Assist or supervise automation setup, startup, and debug at customer facility.
- Training on equipment for customer management and operators.
- Maintain a high standard of professionalism in all customer and internal interactions both on-site and remote when representing EAM.
Minimum Qualifications/Technical Knowledge Required:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Controls Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- CAD drafting ability.
- CAD circuit & enclosure design ability. 2D required.
- Use of Computer Aided Design software (AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS)
- PLC programming using ladder logic, step logic, function block logic, scripting
- Technical writing skills.
- Positive customer interaction.
- Understanding of mechanical components such as ball screws, pneumatic actuators, belt drives, linkages, as they relate to machine control.
- Advanced understanding of electrical components, such as AC and DC motors, drives, servo motor drives, sensors, switches, pneumatic valves, temperature controls, vision systems, PLC and I/O networking.
- Knowledge of circuit theory, electrical wiring, load balancing, and high & low voltage systems.
- Ability to properly direct and communicate with assembly team.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word.
- Ability to travel to customer locations to perform service and/or machine installations.
