Position Summary
The Medical Director provides physician leadership and clinical oversight for Nuvia Medical’s owned practices and supports the organization’s affiliated provider network as assigned. Working in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, Quality Improvement, Operations, Human Resources, Compliance, Credentialing, and Contracting, the Medical Director helps ensure safe, consistent, evidence-based care and serves as the organization’s physician escalation point for clinical matters within the role’s scope.
This is a hands-on, part-time medical leadership role focused on the permanent responsibilities identified in Nuvia Medical’s CMO transition plan. The Medical Director is expected to provide practical oversight, timely physician decision-making, and direct support to providers while collaborating with operational leaders who retain responsibility for day-to-day administrative execution.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Medical Oversight & Regulatory Responsibilities
- Serve as the CLIA Laboratory Director or responsible physician for designated Nuvia Medical laboratories, including completion of required oversight, documentation, and regulatory responsibilities.
- Provide physician oversight for designated physicians and advanced practice providers, including supervision or collaboration where required by law, payer requirements, policy, or organizational assignment.
- Provide clinical oversight related to controlled-substance prescribing arrangements and other physician-level responsibilities assigned to the Medical Director.
- Review and provide physician approval or clinical sign-off for standing protocols, clinical procedures, and other documents requiring medical authority.
- Support regulatory, credentialing, and payer activities that require physician participation or documentation.
Clinical Leadership & Escalation
- Serve as the primary physician escalation point for clinical questions, patient-safety concerns, adverse events, and complex clinical issues within the assigned scope.
- Provide medical guidance to physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, Quality Improvement leaders, and Operations leaders as needed.
- Partner with Compliance, Quality Improvement, and executive leadership to identify, evaluate, and mitigate clinical risk.
- Support consistent application of evidence-based clinical standards across Nuvia Medical practices.
Provider Leadership, Meetings & Development
- Lead or participate in daily population health huddles, weekly physician meetings, and other recurring clinical leadership forums as assigned.
- Participate in monthly health plan, insurance, quality, and utilization meetings when physician input is required.
- Conduct or support provider one-on-one meetings focused on clinical performance, quality, engagement, and professional development.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and clinical guidance to physicians and advanced practice providers.
- Support physician orientation and onboarding by introducing clinical expectations, escalation pathways, quality priorities, and organizational standards.
- Support continuing medical education and guest-speaker programming related to preventive medicine and clinical best practices, as appropriate.
Clinical Policies, Workflows & Quality Support
- Partner with Quality Improvement and Operations leaders to develop, review, and maintain clinical policies, escalation pathways, workflows, standing protocols, and care standards.
- Provide physician input on infrastructure or workflow issues that affect clinical quality, provider effectiveness, patient safety, or continuity of care.
- Support implementation of clinical performance improvement plans identified through quality, population health, utilization, payer, or operational review.
- Collaborate with Quality Improvement leaders, who retain day-to-day ownership of assigned HEDIS, population health, high-risk patient, hospitalization, annual wellness, transition-of-care, chronic-care, and outreach initiatives.
Committees & External Clinical Relationships
- Serve on or provide physician leadership to the Peer Review and Credentialing Committee and other clinical governance committees as assigned.
- Participate in provider credentialing, peer review, clinical performance review, and medical staff governance activities requiring physician judgment.
- Serve as a clinical liaison to health plans, vendors, laboratories, and other external partners when medical expertise or physician authority is required.
- Provide medical oversight for clinically oriented vendor relationships, formulary matters, and related initiatives assigned to the role.
On-Call & Coverage Support
- Participate in and help stabilize the physician on-call coverage model for designated Nuvia Medical practices.
- Provide physician leadership in resolving gaps in coverage and expanding the available provider pool, while Operations retains responsibility for building and maintaining the schedule.
- Serve in scheduled or backup call coverage when specifically agreed upon as part of the employment or independent contractor arrangement.
Provider Recruitment & Selection
- Participate in interviews and selection of physician and advanced practice provider candidates, in partnership with Human Resources, Operations, and executive leadership.
- Evaluate candidates for clinical competence, judgment, professionalism, cultural alignment, and ability to meet Nuvia Medical’s patient-care and quality expectations.
Minimum Qualifications
- MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
- Active, unrestricted Florida medical license, or ability to obtain and maintain one before beginning assigned duties.
- Board certification in a primary care specialty strongly preferred; pediatrics or family medicine experience is particularly relevant to Nuvia Medical’s practice model.
- Prior experience as a Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Chief Medical Officer, department chair, or comparable physician leader preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of clinical quality, patient safety, peer review, provider oversight, credentialing, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with population health, value-based care, managed care, HEDIS, utilization management, or Patient-Centered Medical Home programs preferred.
- Strong communication, judgment, relationship-building, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a part-time leadership structure and provide timely availability for physician-level decisions and escalations.
