What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant — Inpatient Pain Management & Palliative Care position at Premier Health Network?
Pain and Palliative Associates | Abrazo Scottsdale
Full-time coverage: 7 days on / 7 days off
Estimated annual compensation: $145,000–$175,000 | 1099 Independent Contractor
Pain and Palliative Associates is seeking an experienced, highly motivated Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide inpatient pain management and palliative care consultations at Abrazo Scottsdale. The position follows a 7-days-on, 7-days-off schedule, with additional PRN assistance covering provider vacations at Abrazo Central and Abrazo Heart.
We are looking for someone who takes initiative, practices independently with sound clinical judgment, and actively builds relationships with hospital teams. Success in this role requires both excellent patient care and the confidence to introduce yourself to providers, explain our services, and become a trusted resource throughout the hospital.
This position includes a professional outreach and practice-development component. The ideal candidate enjoys connecting with people, maintains a visible and approachable presence, and helps grow the service through responsiveness, education, and strong working relationships.
Compensation
This is a 1099 independent contractor opportunity with encounter-based compensation:
- Initial 90-day training and probationary period: $30 per consult.
- After successful completion of the probationary period: Eligible for an increase to $35 per encounter.
Estimated annual compensation is $145,000–$175,000. Actual earnings depend on patient volume and encounters completed; this is not a guaranteed annual salary.
Our practice has established hospital relationships and an existing consultation service. Providers are expected to take ownership of maintaining and strengthening those relationships. Consistent visibility, reliable follow-through, and excellent care help build trust and support appropriate consultation growth.
Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient pain management and palliative care consultations and follow-up care.
- Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families, and hospital care teams.
- Work independently, organize your daily patient workload, and complete timely, accurate documentation.
- Proactively establish relationships with hospitalists, specialists, nurses, case managers, and other members of the care team.
- Introduce and explain the practice’s services, educate teams about appropriate consultations, and identify opportunities to meet unmet patient needs.
- Represent Pain and Palliative Associates professionally and serve as an accessible, responsive hospital resource.
- Maintain reliable coverage during the 7-on/7-off schedule.
- Assist with PRN vacation coverage at Abrazo Central and Abrazo Heart.
Ideal Candidate
You are a self-directed provider who follows through, communicates confidently, and takes pride in building a service. You should be comfortable initiating conversations, developing referral relationships, and contributing to practice growth while keeping clinical appropriateness and patient needs at the center of every decision.
Prior experience with provider outreach, service development, or healthcare marketing is a plus. A willingness to actively participate in these responsibilities is essential.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates must:
- Be board-certified as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
- Hold an active Arizona professional license.
- Maintain an active DEA registration.
- Carry their own malpractice insurance.
- Demonstrate strong clinical judgment and the ability to practice independently within a collaborative inpatient team.
- Have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
Pain management or palliative care board certification is preferred. Providers who are not currently certified must obtain pain management or palliative care board certification within 12 months of their start date.
Training and Support
Shadowing and in-person training will be provided during onboarding and the initial training period. Candidates should be prepared to develop increasing independence and take ownership of their clinical responsibilities and hospital relationships.
