Preferred Behavioral Health Agency is a growing behavioral health organization dedicated to empowering children, adolescents, adults, and families through compassionate, person-centered mental health services.

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Behavioral Health Counselors (PSR/BST/QMHP) to join our team and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the individuals and families we serve throughout Alabama.

Position Summary

The Behavioral Health Counselor will provide Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR), Behavioral Skills Training (BST), and other approved behavioral health support services to individuals experiencing mental health, behavioral, and functional challenges.

Services may be provided in the client’s home, community, school, clinic, and other approved settings, based on the individual’s treatment plan and service needs.

The Behavioral Health Counselor will work as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide services in accordance with the individual’s individualized treatment plan, agency policies, payer requirements, and applicable Alabama regulations.

Essential Responsibilities

Provide PSR and BST services in accordance with individualized treatment plans

Teach and reinforce coping and emotional regulation skills

Assist clients with developing appropriate communication and social skills

Support clients with problem-solving and decision-making skills

Teach independent living, daily living, and self-management skills

Assist clients with community integration and development of greater independence

Help clients identify and utilize appropriate coping strategies

Support clients in achieving treatment goals and objectives

Provide services in home, school, community, clinic, and other approved settings

Establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships with clients and families

Monitor and communicate client progress, barriers, and concerns

Complete timely and accurate progress notes and required service documentation

Maintain documentation in accordance with agency, payer, and regulatory requirements

Collaborate with licensed clinicians, supervisors, families, schools, and other members of the treatment team

Participate in treatment team meetings, staff meetings, training, and supervision as required

Maintain client confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements

Follow all agency policies and procedures

Maintain compliance with applicable Alabama Medicaid, Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH), and other applicable state and federal requirements

Perform other duties related to client care and behavioral health services as assigned

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, Sociology, Criminal Justice, or a related field

Ability to meet applicable qualifications for the behavioral health services being provided

Valid driver’s license

Reliable transportation for community-based services

Ability to pass required background checks and screenings

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Strong organizational and documentation skills

Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

Professionalism, dependability, and commitment to client-centered care

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience providing PSR, BST, Community Support, Case Management, or related behavioral health services

Experience working with children, adolescents, adults, or families

Experience providing community-based behavioral health services

Knowledge of Alabama Medicaid behavioral health services

Familiarity with Alabama behavioral health service requirements

Experience using electronic health record (EHR) systems

Experience completing behavioral health documentation

CPR/First Aid certification

Previous QMHP experience or eligibility

This position is primarily community-based and may involve providing services in:

Client homes

Schools

Community settings

Outpatient or clinic settings

Other approved service locations

Because services may be provided throughout the community, candidates must be comfortable traveling to client service locations and working in environments outside of a traditional office setting.
